The small part of the large intestine is called the cecum. It is also called the vermiform appendix. The word vermiform comes from the Latin word meaning "worm-like".
It can grow up to 2-20 cm in length. The average was about 9 centimeters. The largest appendix was found to be 28 centimeters.

Some antibiotics cause a type of diarrhea. This is called "pseudomembranous colitis".The disease is more common in people who do not have an appendix.
Scientists at Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina have proven that the part of the colon that has long been considered unnecessary is actually very beneficial to humans.
