What we see in having a pet
Hello People. Hope you're doing good.
Thursday went well with normal routine and I thank God for that. I'm sure yours went well too.
Since I joined this platform I've read countless articles on how people adore their pets, how these pets became family members. Some has names to their pets and referred them as human with "him" and "her".
Maybe it's because of the way we were brought up in my local region that made us not to fancy having a pet. Although growing up, I saw people having pets in my community but not as close as people here adore their pets. The common pet were dogs and these dogs were usually on a free life zone (they're allowed to roam around and fend for themselves), which often result to people killing and have feast on them. The dogs were usually the local ones and not these hybrid type.
The funny thing is that most people that trained dogs then did it for meat as the end product. At the end when the dog has matured, they kill it and use it to celebrate a great feast.
Those period also, the dogs became a serious issue for the community because of the way they damaged people's property and bitten people, hence they banned dogs in the community. A law was made that any dog seen outside roaming is free to be killed and eaten... this made People hunt dogs and enjoy the so called sweet meat from them.
CAT AS A PET
This is the one I'm not that familiar with. In my environment then, cats were seen as evil animals and as such anyone seen with it is automatically termed with "he/she has something diabolic thing to do with it".
It's not simply our fault like that also because there were stories of experiences that made us to believed.
Some said if witches are going to coven for meetings, they transform to black cats and disappear or run to an "invisible environment".
Their sounds are not exceptional, as you know, cat has a funny and scary sound when it cries. I remember those days at home, coming outside at midnight to urinate, if you are not brave enough you'd run back inside the house because the sounds and cries of cats would be so scary. [the "meow" sound]
Our local movie industry also has done a lot in painting cats as evil animals or animals that are possessed by some diabolical powers. My fellow Nigerians knows what I'm talking about. In those movies, cats are used as the best option to portray witches.
There was a woman that has a big shop harbored cats in the shop to help in killing and chasing away rats. That period a lot of people stopped patronizing her because they said keeping cats in her store was one of her diabolical means to enchant customers or other evil mission. Actually, the woman was known for such before that period, her records were all known by the people (records like how she had visited all types of Spiritual houses...).
Even my mom stopped all of us from entering the shop because they believed that her reason for keeping cats in her shop was not genuine. But I do visit there always because the son of the woman was my friend and classmate. But truthfully, the way the cats act sometimes makes someone to think otherwise.
A big tumbs up to you guys that have pets. I don't think I can do that anytime soon, having a dog or cat as pet. Although dog is manageable but not cat. I'm not against it.๐
I know you guys have a different perspective on having cat as pet, but what I shared is what we see in my community.

That superstition of cats being ebeul is very common in all regions of Nigeria apart from the north. As a matter of fact. Cats are loved a lot in Islam because of their hygienic and calm nature. It is even said that one of the men of God in the old testament had the eyes of a cat, hence I'm t is forbidden to harm a cat. Talk more of killing or eating it.
