There is some saying that "Silence Means Yes".
Do you agree on this?
Me? I don't. I strongly disagree on this. Cause silence means a lot of things. A lot things that you chose not to put into words for some special reason.
When do silence means yes? And When do silence means no?
Sometimes silence means YES, sometimes it means NO.
When my husband asked my permission if he can go hang out with his friends, sometimes, I just answer it with silence.
And to me, in that case...silence means NO.
I often not say anything if I'm against about a thing. And my husband already used to it already. He knew that it was a NO if I didn't answered cause if it's a YES, I will immediately say "Sure you can go".
Silence will only means NO if someone confirmed that it's a NO and similarly, it will only means YES if someone confirmed that it's a YES. Confirmation in this case would be the body language and of course, the facial expression.
Sometimes what you speak is against with what your body language says.
Sometimes, you say YES but your facial expression means a NO and vice versa.
Sometimes, silence means pain.
Yes, silence is also a way of expressing pain. There are people that when they're broken hearted, they don't wanna speak at all. It's too painful for them to talk about their miserable past. Sometimes, it's too painful for us to tell to the person we love the most but at the same time the person who hurt us most how much anger we have inside but despite that anger, we still don't wanna loose them.
Sometimes, you just choose to be silent so you won't hear words that will just intensify the pain that you're feeling.
That's why there's this commonly used line "Gusto ko munang mapag-isa".
Silence also means confusion.
When you're not sure what to say and don't know if it will get things better, or will just worsen the situation/incident you're currently at, you are urged just to keep in silence instead.
This happens to me a lot of times. When I and my husband are on a heated conversation and then he just suddenly said "Ano? gusto mo maghiwalay na tayo?". For me to save myself from making decision that will cause my kids to grow up with a broken family, I would rather choose to be silent.
Sometimes, you chose to be silent to let the other party know how much pain they have caused you.
Sometimes silence is a way of saying "You're not okay" to the person who doesn't actually care to know if you're okay or not.
Silence could also means love.
This usually happens in a person who accidently fell in love with his/her bestfriend. To keep their friendship lasts, he/she will love that person in silence, will watch him in silence, will take care of him in silence, dream of them in silence, and miss them silently.
Piolo Pascual's character on his movie with Alessandra de Rossi "My Amanda" is the perfect example of this (it's available in Netflix in case you're interested).
Silence is a sign of loyalty.
When someone asked questions about the person you care the most and you know that answer to that questions will lead him/her to shame, you would rather choose to be silent than utter any words. And that's loyalty.
You would rather keep yourself silent that betray the person you loved the most.
Sometimes, silence means anger.
When you hate your neighbor cause they keep on making gossips about you, how do you express your anger? Sometimes, by not talking to them right? By pretending that they do not exist, right?
When you hate your partner cause he keep on texting his ex, how will you express your anger? Sometimes, by not answering when they are asking you something, right?
When you hate your sister cause she used your favorite dress to a party, how will you express your anger? Sometimes, by not talking to her right? By pretending that she's not there and nobody's talking at all, right?
That how silence could mean anger.
How about you? What is the meaning of silence to you? Let it be heard.
Maybe sometimes to avoid argument, my silence means no..I agree with it is not always means yes.
