Today marks World Earth Day. World Earth Day was on January 22, 1970 in the United States, when mass rallies were held to protect the environment. There will be no mass rallies this year due to the pandemic, but Earth Day will be marked with digital events and a digital political summit.

On World Earth Day on April 22, events are held every year that promote awareness of the protection of the environment on Earth.

It all started on January 28, 1969, when large quantities of oil began to spill into the sea off a well near the California coast near the city of Santa Barbara from a well drilled by the Union oil platform.

The oil spill kills a huge number of animals

More than three million liters of oil flowed into the sea, killing more than ten thousand seabirds, dolphins, seals and sea lions. The event sparked a lot of outrage and encouraged environmentalists to take action.

Part of their campaigns was also the creation of environmental regulations, the spread of environmental awareness and education, and last but not least, the beginning of marking Earth Day.

Spring homeage Earth Day

In 1969, at a UNESCO conference in San Francisco, peace activist John McConnell proposed a day to honor the Earth and the concept of peace. This day was first celebrated on March 21, 1970, the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere.

Then, U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin proposed that nationwide environmental education be organized in the U.S. on April 22, 1970. In January 1969, Senator Nelson saw an oil slick from a plane after a spill in Santa Barbara. This scene encouraged him to protect the environment.

In the US, it is almost traditional for a presidential couple to plant a tree on World Earth Day.

The birth of Earth Day

Nelson has hired young activist Denis Hayes as national coordinator of nationwide environmental education. Nelson and Hayes called the event Earth Day.

Hayes and his colleagues expanded Earth Day - it was not just a nationwide teaching on the environment, but a day of mass rallies in support of environmental protection. In the United States, more than 20 million people are said to have taken to the streets on April 22, 1970.

From national day to world day

A large part of the participants in the rallies were represented by union members. The union of workers in the automobile industry thus played an important role. If the first Earth Day in 1970 was limited to the United States, in 1990 Hayes internationalized Earth Day. Earth Day was celebrated in as many as 141 countries around the world this year.

Paris Climate Agreement

Earth Day 2016 was also chosen to sign the Paris Agreement - the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The Paris Agreement is an agreement between more than 190 countries, and one of its main goals is to limit the rise in global warming.

World Earth Day is coordinated by the global Earth Day Network (EDN). This year’s Earth Day celebration will run from April 20-22. April 20 was marked by the Youth Climate Summit.

Digital event

April 21 was marked by the World Summit on Environmental Protection, and today the World Climate Summit will be organized by the Bidn Administration. At the same time, Earthday.org will run a digital event.

The topics of the event, which will include workshops, panels and special presentations, will be, among others, new green technologies, innovative mindset that can restore the global ecosystem, climate and environmental awareness, afforestation efforts, climate restoration technologies.Climate activists, innovators, opinion leaders, artists, musicians, online influencers, entrepreneurs and young leaders of the future will take part.

Bidnov World Climate Summit

Biden’s Climate Summit is a two-day virtual summit to which U.S. President Joe Biden has invited forty world leaders. These are the leaders of countries that produce about 80 percent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. The theme of the summit is the strengthening of measures to combat climate change.

Biden invited Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, among others. The list includes British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Polish President Andrzej Duda, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern ...
