Prehistorical Find
Yesterday, my husband found a fossilized snail shell in our dry creek bed. This isn't the best picture.
There's an archeological dig site about 5 miles north west of our home. They discovered the fossilized bones of several kinds of mammals such as the three-toed horse and a funny giraffe looking thing. It is not at all uncommon to find potsherds, prehistoric hide scrapers, arrow heads, even a fossilized clam.
We have found many of these things. The snail will be in our private collection asking with the giant clam, some arrowheads, hide scrapers, and a huge piece of Alibates flint that seems to have been the thing arrow heads were chipped off of before they were shaped and tied to arrows.
We've found some of each of these items. My favorites are the giant clam and the hide scraper.
Unfortunately, they are already packed up for our move so I can't get photos of them today.
According to the Panhandle Plains Museum, many people are surprised to learn that the Texas Panhandle was once a marshy area and [their] exhibit features a world-class emphasis on locally discovered reptiles and amphibians from the Late Triassic era (225-200 million years ago) and mammals from the Late Cenozoic era (10-1 million years ago).
That's some serious history there, y'all.
What's the oldest thing you've found?
Oldest thing I've found was grandmas favorite dress haha not even close to what you got there and that was pretty amazing in your area. I found it cool to be an archeologist and rediscover precious gems beneath earth.
