Promises

A person who keeps his word is a person whom others can depend on. When you commit to doing something and then don’t follow through, you make people think that they can’t depend on you. Mistakes happen, but when they do, make sure you own them, apologize, and do what you can to make it right. If you say you’re going to do something, do it.

Don’t make promises you know you can’t keep. If you wish to maintain your reputation for honesty and truthfulness, don’t say things just to be polite or avoid conflict. Be a man of your word and keep your promises. Promises are made to be kept and people will have a higher regard for you when you keep your word. It may be easier to tell a lie or weave an intricate web of half-truths to get out of a commitment, but you’ll eventually be found out. If you say you’ll do something, then do it. Don’t leave others hanging. You may have thought that you had a good reason for not following through, but you made other people doubt your word when you didn’t keep your promise.

If you say you’re going to do something, make good on it. If you can’t deliver, don’t make the commitment in the first place. If you already promised to do something, do it. When you promise to do something and to keep to your word, you become untrustworthy. Ensure to keep the promises you make to others and if you know you're not going to keep your promises, don't make them then.

When you show that you're trustworthy, then you'll be respected by others. Be the person that can be trusted. Be honest and tell the truth when you don’t know something. You may think others will see through your ploys but they don’t. It only takes a few times for people to start trusting you and then for them to never trust you again. When you commit to something and then don’t follow through, people see you as unreliable.
