There are things in life that should not be touched and have to remain as they are. There is no need to do something forced, just to look good with a few. If due to a greater need, the subject has to be touched on again, it must be done with the best of intentions and the greatest of care. It's like trying to repaint the Mona Lisa picture, to make a second version.
In 1999 a movie came out that completely revolutionized the world. Its special effects, its iconic action scenes, the first time it was seen in detail in slow motion as it was to dodge the bullets of a gun or even stop them. The Matrix arrived and we were all perplexed. The performance of Keanu Reeves playing Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss playing Trinity, along with Laurence Fishburne in the role of Morpheus and with the spectacular performance of Hugo Weaving in the role of the agent Smith. This was a movie that leaves scenes that are never erased in your head.
Later they arrive with the other two parts, to end the trilogy. Although the second and third parts leave a little to be desired compared to the first, even so, they were worth enjoying and many scenes full of action and waste of special effects all-new for their time. Even one of the coolest car chases you've ever seen in the movies. In the second part on the highway. A classic wherever you look at it.
The franchise closed by a third and the story was told. The war with the machines was over and the world would be a better place from then on. Everything else is left to the interpretation of moviegoers.
But then, a few years ago, we got the news that a 4th part was in the works for The Matrix. The news moved many, others not so much. Based on the principle of: "Do not try to improve the unbeatable" or "The second parts have never been good", respecting that this is not the second, but rather the 4th installment.
A few days ago it was released: The Matrix Resurrections. Two days ago I saw the movie at home, and this is my criteria.
From here the article is full of spoilers and references to the film. If you have not seen it yet or you intend to see it, you are free to continue reading.
Beginning
My first impression was excellent. My face was lit up like a light bulb. The film began and the opening scene was a true copy of the first part. Shown from another perspective.
The action was eloquent enough up to that point, but without failing to see that it was a copy of the first part in many respects. The gist is that they are looking for Neo, whom everyone already believes is dead. That's when Morpheus appears, replaced by actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. By the 11th minute of the film, my face had changed the mood several times, but in that exact minute was when I thought to myself: "Is this a joke?" The forced scene, even when he says: "I am Morpheus and I have to find Neo."
The truth is that this Morpheus character does not paint or color in the entire film. It is something that could perfectly have been removed from the film and nothing would have happened. If in the end, no one understood why to remove the real Morpheus and put him in his place.
Who is Neo?
Neo is introduced to us as a video game designer. Creator of the trilogy The Matrix, and winning several awards for these games. He is one of the best in his field. He has recreated from his vision and ingenuity everything that happened in the previous 3 films and put it in a game. In this way, they control it by taking away the value of the only thing it has. Now that the world knows that The Matrix exists, but in reality, it is a simple computer game. Neo does not know how to discern if everything is an invention of his imagination or if he actually lived it at some point. They have even changed his face so that no one can find it. When they look at it, others just see an old man.
When he first sees Trinity, the connection is so strong that when he shakes hands she asks him if they have met before. The machines had not killed them and they preferred to save their lives because they generate a large amount of energy between the two and in the end, the machines need that energy. It is just a bit hard to believe, but at the end of the day, it could work.
That's when everything starts to get worse. It was when we were introduced to Neo's boss, who is nothing more than Agent Smith. But we move on from this:
To this:
I'm not ready for a birthday face then. 20 minutes have passed into the movie. I do not know what it is about yet, or what the goal is and they have changed me to two characters that are vital for other actors. Incredible.
Follow the comedy and the scenes do nothing but disturb. They keep putting flashbacks of the first part at all times. Half an hour of the film and it does not advance. We are talking about a movie that lasts 2 and a half hours. So you start wondering when this will start.
The moment that bothered me the most was when Neo had to take the pill again. It's like a fresh start to the movie, but meaner, incredibly meaner. They even dare to put images of the first part in the theater, because according to Morpheus it was for βnostalgiaβ. That's when they blow my mind and say: "They are images of your game." The game was perfect. Imagine that the images are real, like a film. The video card and the computer that is required to play it, nobody could buy it Ahah.
He takes the pill and as expected, the joke continued. Again more flashbacks that are a thousand times better than the current scene.
Obviously later we went through the scene of the fight with Morpheus again, but as I told you above, 10 times worse. We see a tired and heartless Keneu Revees. It seems that Jhon Wick has taken all the credit. The only thing that can be seen is that he is now taking a pulse with his hands, a kind of protective field. Little more to add.
I don't want to repeat myself a lot, but the movie leaves me no other option. Everything we see we have already seen in the first part, but they have managed to make it even worse. The scenes are repeated and even while they are happening, they put scenes from the first part. Just pathetic. It hurts me to see the movie and see how my childhood is destroyed. There is no clear objective and 1 hour and a half have passed.
We passed from this:
To this:
One of the best scenes in the film is when the architect of the Matrix, this time played well by the actor Neil Patrick Harris, makes time stop while he moves at supersonic speed. This effect is always welcome. He just keep using it over and over again and it gets tedious.
Already here you realize that the film will not improve and that the only objective is to get Trinity to free her. There is no other goal, no other end. You won't find memorable scenes in the movie or anything like that. They do not exist. When you finish watching it, you will simply forget that you saw it and it will be difficult to find something to keep.
In the end, perhaps seeing Trinity being able to fly is something that deserves our respect. Even Neo at that moment can't fly and she can.
Although in the end he recovers his version of Superman and they both stay flying and happy all over the world. Maybe the movie was looking for that from the beginning. That they both had the ending they deserve. But they did not manage to do it in the best way. Looking for a little more information, the problem is whether the company was going to make the film at any cost, with the original equipment or not. But they were going to carry it out. That is why these things happen.
My grade is 3/5. It could have been a success, but from a well-crafted script and a groundbreaking idea, it was hard to do something that was really worth it. Lack of emotion, risk a little more, and bet on more complex scenes. To say that Neo did not dodge any bullets did not fly and stop the bullets in a horrific photo shoot, and that is all that sums up this movie.
I have commented to @PVMihalache that he should see it so that he is the one who has his own criteria. I'm not trying to impose mine, but unfortunately, after seeing the many others that travel all over the internet, I am one of those who best value ββthe movie Ahah.
It hurts me infinitely that one of the best movies for many ends this way. There are things that should remain forever untouched. That makes them works of art.
