Twitter ban lifted, next bank crypto bank
The major news headline on all National Newspapers and blogs is all about the lifted Twitter ban by the Federal Government of Nigeria. The news was greeted with indifference from different quarters.
First, it's a good thing to be able to access the website without using VPN. The stress of activating VPN each time I want to check a tweet or I want to tweet is so disturbing. It's a thing of joy to be able to use the bird app again like a free person. However, the questions are still there and the same question we asked 6 months ago when the ban was announced is still on everyone's lips - " Why place the ban?"
Worthy of note is the fact that despite the ban, the number of people using the bird app from the country increased in the last year
Another question being asked is "why lift the ban now?".The answer isn't farfetched, Elections are coming and they need our votes. The year 2023 will see another general election. They need Twitter for their campaigns. But are we fooled? No!.
We live in a country where almost eight out of 10 of us are not satisfied with our government. A country with crumbling mental health institutions and schools. A country where over 60% of our population relies on some sort of assistance to get by. We are a nation of people taking loans to pay for school and then paying them back with interest once we graduate. We're a country where my generation is the first to be worse off than our parents and we can't even vote! We're the reason why politicians hold up illusions about themselves like "I will fight for you!" without telling the truth about themselves like "I've been in office for over 30 years and I have done nothing to help you make your life better".
Many things are wrong in this country, and we are not getting anywhere with the same old political band-aid solutions. Most of us do not know who we vote for, and when we do find out, we usually don't like what we have discovered.
The disregard for the masses opinion is something the present government has displayed from time to time. But what's the assurance that the other party making promises will fulfil it. We are tired of listening to promises that won’t be fulfilled. Hopefully, we will go out in masses to vote come 2023.
Please in this world of negative beliefs, we shouldn’t give up on Nigeria, we need to do something to make this country great again, don’t get involved in drugs or destruction, let’s be an example for our generation and come up with solutions to problems that wrong this country.
What about the crypto ban?
After the end sars protest the federal government placed a ban on Twitter and banks accepting cryptocurrency. Since the protest was funded by various international celebrities using cryptocurrency, they supported the youths by making donations with BTC, ETH and other cryptos. The birth of a reaction from the government, twitter and banks transacting with crypto got banned. This is known to everyone by now.
The reason given for this ban is like every other given. Baseless and just an excuse to punish the "wayward" youths. Then came the launch of the Digital currency (E-naira). Which is a stable coin. The only logical reason which isn't logical I can place on the introduction of the digital currency is to be known as the first African country to do such. Nothing else!.
We await the next announcement from the Government, maybe the crypto ban will be lifted just to please the masses ahead of the coming Election. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
