Take time to rest
Yesterday was a typical roller-coaster day. I made the decision not to write an article since I have a job to deliver to a client. I was in a good mood since the work doesn’t require much work. Also, there’s this type of Joy I get when I’m practising my professional job. I’m still not decided yet whether to practice after graduating or take a two-year course in the new passion I’m developing, but one thing is for sure, whether I choose to practice as a QS full time or not I will always take out time to do some jobs once in a while.
While bubbling in the Euphoria of creating a priced bill (2nd time this week) I got a call that my Godfather fell and was rushed to the hospital. I’ve been having plans to visit him for some time now, but I always want to go to him with something. This is a man that has done so many good things for me. I decided to get what I have planned for him with the money with me. On getting to the hospital, I was informed that he is in a critical condition.
Apparently “Big Daddy” as I do call him, has been working without rest, “big Mummy” (his wife) said he has been warned several times by the doctor to take a break but he refused to. He refused to take a needed break, and now he is on an enforced break. It hurt me to see the strong, tall man I know looking fragile and lean. The worry lines all over big mummy’s was another source of pain for me. I called his son and we talked at length and also planned how to see to it that big Daddy get his much-needed rest. I liquidated some assets to pay the bill and went home, with the plan to visit him today.
So many of us are like big Daddy, we work tirelessly without resting. The men in particular give themselves unnecessary stress. After going to work from Monday to Friday, instead of resting, we go to the club on Friday night, Saturday morning -we are off to the field to play ball with our gang and in the evening it’s straight down to the viewing centre to watch ball with the boys. On Sunday-it’s time for church. Before we know it another Monday is here. That’s the lifestyle of a typical Nigerian Man.
Amid our busy schedule, we need to pause and take a break. You deserve to enjoy your life and to have fun. You deserve to take a break, sometimes. To spend some time with your family, take a trip. To play a game. To read a book. To watch a movie. To get inspired. To be yourself.
In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it's easy to lose sight of what really matters. Whether you're an entrepreneur, a mother, a college student, or all three, it's all too easy to get caught up in the day-to-day grind.
Don't feel guilty for taking a break and exploring your passions. What makes you happy? What makes you feel like you are contributing to this world in the best way possible? Taking a break doesn’t necessarily mean you should hibernate and stop living. Do something relaxing, go for a checkup, and have a good time with your family because life is short, we don’t know what tomorrow holds for us. So many of us are so quick to run from one place to another, from one event to another, from one lesson to another... We want everything and we want it all now. Rest is the key to all that you desire. Rest is the key to motivating yourself. Rest is the key to realizing your potential.
Once you have rest, everything else falls into place. You will have more energy than ever and you will be full of new ideas and have a new perspective on life.
Now is the perfect time to stop what you're doing and explore your passions. You will find yourself again and become even better than before.
Thanks for Reading! 💚💚💚
I just saw a notification of @Jane directing me here to read your article after she read mine.
You are right that taking rest is important. While reading this, I was having some other thoughts in mind. At least before you take rest you really needed, it's necessary you work hard to save because you cannot be resting when you know you haven't done much as you expected. You wanna rest but you don't have what to enjoy with? You want to rest and things you could have done, you haven't done them? The truth is, we all need rest, but working to achieve your goals should be your priority because as they say "no food for a lazy man" and even the Bible says "faith without action is useless".
Rest when it's time to rest, also work hard when you know you have no one to help you when things are hard for you. It's all about balancing rest and work.
