Well-mannered is better than well-educated!?
Have you ever heard this statement, well-mannered is better than well-educated? I know this is very self-explanatory phrase but needs also to be explained with concrete examples. Is there a difference between well-mannered and well-educated? Can you consider a well-educated is also a well-mannered? What is your opinion if people would say that if you're well-educated, expectedly you are also well-mannered? Do you agree on this? Well, it's not my point to make a debate on this topic. I know what's on mind. You want also to explain these two words, well-mannered and well-educated. Is there something wrong with my topic?
I have published an article that talked about aiming the goal of true education. It was the principle of Martin Luther that says, Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education. Meaning to say, it is not purely knowledge and skills that an individual should be acquired in school but what is most important is the values or good attitude they should possess. In addition, true education is not only measured by mastery of the lessons in the class but it requires also a good moral value to be shown towards other people.
I think you're one of the many who would say that children today on their generation is very quite different from the children of the old generation. They would say that children nowadays are not well-mannered even they are educated. Parents can testify it while teachers can prove it.
Let's go back to these two words, well-mannered and well-educated. How do they differ to each other? Which is really better, well-mannered or well-educated? Well-educated persons are highly educated who are having extensive information or understanding. They are knowledgeable persons with good education. When we say well-educated, it doesn't only refer to the cognitive (mind) and psychomotor (skills) parts of the human development but the affective part (behaviour) should be developed as well. So, we cannot separate manners from educated people. And we cannot consider a person who is well-educated if he or she is not well-mannered because a well-educated is a well-mannered. How can I say this? It is because a well-educated is a whole packaged development of mind, skills and values.
You can be a well-mannered person but you have lacked of knowledge. And it is better to say that well-mannered is better than literate or knowledgeable person. But still, it is good to be educated one.
In our school, we have different programs for our students. We have STE (Science, Technology and Engineering) and SPA (Special Program in Arts) programs. These programs catered to the bright students after they passed the examination. But in terms of the learning areas, STE students have only one session for the values subject but the SPA learners, they don't have that subject. That's why one of our heads reacted on this because according to her, how can students acquire good behaviour if they were not inculcated with values in school. She pointed that they will not become educated students or graduates.

That's all for tonight. What is your comment on this? Can you also prove that our new generations are not well-mannered? How about the role of the parents towards their children? Are they the one to be blamed on this? Or are they also influenced by too much exposure on gadgets? What can you say about this topic? Please feel free to drop your comments.
I would like also to thank my following sponsors. Thank you so much for your renewal. God bless!
