Hello, my friends, I want to share with you an amazing place that is not seen every day...I would like to hear your opinion about this place, would you like to visit it or maybe you have visited it after all.
The Little "Wonders" of Catalonia: A Magnificent Medieval Town on a Cliff. In some places, the rock is so wide that only two houses can fit on it.
Castelfolit de la Roca is one of the most picturesque villages in Catalonia.
This small urban area is bordered by the rivers Fluvia and Toronel, between which rises a spectacular basalt cliff on which the town is located.
This town is located on a narrow belt of basalt rock, which rises to a height of 50 meters, one kilometer long. In some places, the rock is so wide that only two houses can fit on it.
With an area of less than one square kilometer, Castelfolit de la Roca is one of the smallest villages in Spain.
The view of the church and houses high on the edge of the basalt rock has become one of the most photographed and most popular scenes in this region.
The basalt rock on which the city is located was formed as a result of the erosive effect of the rivers Fluvia and Toronel on the remnants of lava flows from volcanic eruptions that occurred several thousand years ago. When the lava hardened, it became basalt, a hard rock that takes on different shapes. The cliff is the result of two lava flows; the first occurred 217,000 years ago, and originated in the area of the village of Batet. The second, newer formation from the Beguda volcano, is 192,000 years old.
The town itself, Castelfolit de la Roca, dates back to the Middle Ages and consists of squares and narrow streets. At the very end of the cliff there is a lookout from which you can see a spectacular panorama.
The strategic position of the city and its naturally favorable position for defense can be fully appreciated.
On one side of the cliff there is an old church of San Salvador dating from the 13th century.
