Rant: Life of an entrepreneur.
Entrepreneurship is something I admire so much and it became a rescue for many Nigerians since the government has failed to provide jobs but despite the struggles of the people, a lot of them are still going through lots of things. Before now, I usually ask myself why entrepreneurs complain of hardship despite working.
Some are overwhelmed with personal responsibility while some are not and still complain, the truth is that you can't understand what they are going through until you put your legs in their shoes. Different factors contribute to their conditions and the environment in which they work play the biggest role in their struggles.
As great as the year 2022 looks, I haven't used electricity more than twice at the farm and it started in late 2021. I am not happy about it because it is eating deep into my purse, the absence of electricity has made me opt for a power generator and I spend almost $20 every week just to ensure my business is going on smoothly but it still isn't enough because the fishes are struggling to adapt to the changes in the farm operation.
The absence of electricity isn't affecting just me and over 200 businesses are completely down in my neighborhood because of the electricity problem and not everyone can afford to run a generator every day to keep their business going. Imagine if someone who sells water and drinks starts running a generator to ice their drinks, would they make a profit to cover the expenses of fuel and generator. A welder was lamenting lately and I can understand his pain, how can a family man be grounded for over a month because of no electricity.
He doesn't have a generator and it is hard for welders to rent a power generator lately because people are scared of how much their engine consumes electricity. A little help from the government by maintaining the country's electricity would have been of great help, the most annoying thing is that we will still pay for the months we aren't using the electricity, isn't that insane?
Due to the electricity issue:
>My fish are struggling to grow because I now change the water every 72 hours instead of my usual 48hours.
Fishes burn more energy living in dirty water which will reduce their growth rate since the nutrient needed to grow has been channeled into surviving.
>The ponds get dirty since I can't wash them like I usually do and that can expose the fish to illness since the water isn't flowing.
>I get physically and mentally exhausted doing the farm job. There was a day the power generator refused to work, it was at midnight. I almost cried because I was helpless seeing the fishes struggling in an empty pond since I drained the water first.
I had to wait till daybreak, went around looking for a mechanic to fix it, and had to stay another 6 hours to change and feed the fish. The stress made me weak for two days, and those are things that sometimes hinder my engagement.
What would it cost the government to provide us with adequate electricity since we are paying for it?
It is annoying, it is a problem beyond my power so I would endure till I eventually move to a bigger farm where I would have complete control of everything later this year.
The situation is the same today and I had to move a heavy engine to and from the farm just to change water since the pump doesn't work perfectly without using a power generator above 5hp. Moving the engine is something I hate doing, it drains me a lot but I don't have a choice since the fishes were due for sorting, the water & ponds and were dirty also.
I left the house before 8 am just to finish early but I was there until past 4 pm. The second problem after moving the generator was getting fuel, I met a massive queue at the gas station that broke my heart.
How can we be lacking electricity and still struggle to purchase fuel? Lots of things were running through my head while waiting for my turn at the gas station.
I started with sorting and before I moved on to washing, my arms hurt while writing this because I haven't washed the ponds for the past 3 weeks now and it requires hard scrubbing to remove the dirt.
I had to wait about an hour after changing the water so that they can be fed, it is not easy repeating this process due to the absence of electricity. It is more of the reasons why I encourage people to invest in things they are passionate about else they will get fed up during hard times like this.
I hope things get better because a situation like this breaks people without other sources of income but thanks to crypto and most especially Bitcoin cash for making things easier.
The article became a rant even though I had something else in mind earlier this morning, I hope you all had a better day than I did?
Regardless of how your day went, I am wishing you a beautiful night rest.
It's truly not easy to be an entrepreneur in Nigeria, especially for is in the fisheries field that rely heavily on electricity. The government are always coming up with ways to frustrate small businesses, electricity is bad and when you decided to rely on generators, they increase the price of fuel π€¦
