❌ Freedom of speech.
I doubt if five out of the fundamental human right are still effective in the world we live in, I am fond of saying that the world is messed up beyond repair but a lot of people believe things can actually get better. It would be a great joy to me if things get better but what are the odds when we can't even enjoy our rights?
I will define fundamental human rights as the things we are entitled to as long as an individual hasn't broken the law governing the society; it is impossible to say a murderer has the freedom to live after being found guilty, they are things we should enjoy as a human regardless of what our differences are.
Freedom of speech is one of the fundamental human rights, it is the right to express yourself freely without the fear of being silenced. I doubt if this particular right is still been allowed to be practiced in the world today. Recently, I stumbled on a Tweet about some journalist who went missing after revealing some secrets regarding the Ukraine/Russia crisis and it got me thinking if we still have the right to express ourselves without the fear of getting arrested or even killed.
I don't know how true the information is but I have been deprived of that right by the police when I was younger and I choose to remain silent because my life matters more than my voice at that point in time. You see people expose the government or a particular group evil acts and the next thing is that they are missing or dead so how is that freedom of speech?
With my little time in the world, one of the things humans hate to hear is the truth. It hurts them a lot and you become their enemies when you don't quit telling it, the right to freedom of speech can land you in trouble if the truth is what you are fond of.
I saw a video and in it, a man was arrested by some customs officers and when his lawyer came, he was denied access to see the man. He demanded to know what his client's offense was and they started beating the lawyer, was that question too much to be asked even if he wasn't a lawyer?
I am not certain about other parts of the world but in Nigeria, the right to freedom of speech attracts issues except if you are influential or bigger than the people involved.
Power can be intoxicating and the powerful people in the world wouldn't hesitate to crush humans posing as an obstacle exposing the evil they have done or intend to do. It is so unfortunate that the world has reached a point where people can no longer express themselves again, lots of people have become targets for just voicing out the things they don't find okay in society.
About a year and a half ago, lots of youth were killed for exercising their right and I believe the message their killers passed out was that our voices mustn't be heard and they will do more just to take that voice away from us completely.
Abuse of freedom of speech.
Aside from being not able to express ourselves freely today because of the challenges that come with it, a lot of people abuse the right to freedom of speech by spreading lies about something, someone, or even a group of people for their selfish interests.
This is bad, social media is a tool that has promoted the abuse of freedom of speech. There is something I find annoying in Nigeria, people want to get famous by all means and take the internet to say shit. They do it against people, organizations, and even products, we must understand that the right to freedom of speech is not something we enjoy doing and whenever you are in a safe zone to use, you must use it rightly than abusing it.
It's right to have freedom of speech. It's to give people a chance to hear your voice. But yeah, the government really going to take it away.
