❌ Freedom of speech.

I doubt if five out of the fundamental human right are still effective in the world we live in, I am fond of saying that the world is messed up beyond repair but a lot of people believe things can actually get better. It would be a great joy to me if things get better but what are the odds when we can't even enjoy our rights?

I will define fundamental human rights as the things we are entitled to as long as an individual hasn't broken the law governing the society; it is impossible to say a murderer has the freedom to live after being found guilty, they are things we should enjoy as a human regardless of what our differences are.

Freedom of speech is one of the fundamental human rights, it is the right to express yourself freely without the fear of being silenced. I doubt if this particular right is still been allowed to be practiced in the world today. Recently, I stumbled on a Tweet about some journalist who went missing after revealing some secrets regarding the Ukraine/Russia crisis and it got me thinking if we still have the right to express ourselves without the fear of getting arrested or even killed.

I don't know how true the information is but I have been deprived of that right by the police when I was younger and I choose to remain silent because my life matters more than my voice at that point in time. You see people expose the government or a particular group evil acts and the next thing is that they are missing or dead so how is that freedom of speech?

With my little time in the world, one of the things humans hate to hear is the truth. It hurts them a lot and you become their enemies when you don't quit telling it, the right to freedom of speech can land you in trouble if the truth is what you are fond of.

I saw a video and in it, a man was arrested by some customs officers and when his lawyer came, he was denied access to see the man. He demanded to know what his client's offense was and they started beating the lawyer, was that question too much to be asked even if he wasn't a lawyer?

I am not certain about other parts of the world but in Nigeria, the right to freedom of speech attracts issues except if you are influential or bigger than the people involved.

Power can be intoxicating and the powerful people in the world wouldn't hesitate to crush humans posing as an obstacle exposing the evil they have done or intend to do. It is so unfortunate that the world has reached a point where people can no longer express themselves again, lots of people have become targets for just voicing out the things they don't find okay in society.

About a year and a half ago, lots of youth were killed for exercising their right and I believe the message their killers passed out was that our voices mustn't be heard and they will do more just to take that voice away from us completely.

Abuse of freedom of speech.

Aside from being not able to express ourselves freely today because of the challenges that come with it, a lot of people abuse the right to freedom of speech by spreading lies about something, someone, or even a group of people for their selfish interests.

This is bad, social media is a tool that has promoted the abuse of freedom of speech. There is something I find annoying in Nigeria, people want to get famous by all means and take the internet to say shit. They do it against people, organizations, and even products, we must understand that the right to freedom of speech is not something we enjoy doing and whenever you are in a safe zone to use, you must use it rightly than abusing it.

It's right to have freedom of speech. It's to give people a chance to hear your voice. But yeah, the government really going to take it away.

Indeed, I agree with you here, my friend. The freedom to speak must not be muzzled under any circumstance, and particularly when, for example, one is calling out the oppression of rights, etc. Very often journalists or rights activists fear persecution because their freedom to speak is stifled.

In the same vein too, as you say, it is important to understand that with rights there is a responsibility to be truthful. Very often people use this freedom to tarnish and malign others believing there should be no consequence for their actions because they are free to speak. This must not be, we must find balance.

Journalists lives are in great danger, they don't have peace doing their job anymore because people pick them as targets for every issue they tackle.

The recent one was the Al jazeera journalist that was killed, it breaks my heart whenever I come across the news. People who abuse the privilege to freedom of speech must stop it.

Look what we became, the country is just being biased towards the common man, hardly you see someone that has connection to the government being abuse, I saw a video of a traffic officer that entered the car of a man and she told him to park in front before she can explain what he did wrong, the man was riding and told the woman that he’s going to work that he work in National Assembly, the woman quickly changed her tone and started calling him his son, if the man was a common man, I’m sure they would have arrested him the moment he pack.

Can you imagine, that the people who are supposed to enforce the law are the ones breaking it. What a great country we live in.

My country is a good example where freedom of speech is not valid, because when you say what's in your mind, nothing will be done about it or you'll be silence... You can see the level of that wickedness.

This takes me back to the massacre on 2020, where the youth are trying to express there self, but it's turns out to be bloody, can't we express ourselves?? Unfortunately , freedom of speech is no longer for everyone but for the few people who are in power.. isn't that crazy! We are afraid of what will happen if we talk, that's why the majority of people are silent and the situation of things is becoming worse, the motto is now "if you can't beat them, you join them"..... I just wish for a change.

I don't know if you remembered the story military man who was captured for saying in a video that the Nigerian Army is defending the country with their lives and that no weapon was purchased to combat terrorism.

He was relieved of his job and only God knows what happened to him in the end. The freedom of speech thing is a huge thing we need to express our displeasure in the society but we just have to live with it or get killed.

Speech is definitely not free anymore ooo. One has to think like four times before they can say what they want to because these days people die just because they ask questions or make any remark at all.

It is really annoying knowing that we just can't express ourselves out there anymore, no one want to lose their head in exchange for freedom of speech.

You're on point. And about abusing freedom of speech, most people misuse their freedom of speech. They feel like they can just talk about anything anyhow. Also, it's just painful that our freedom of speech here in Nigeria is not put to use. It's either you talk and put yourself in trouble or you keep shut😢. It's so sad. Do you remember what the government of Nigeria did to Femi Kuti?

Femi? I haven't read anything about him but I know Fela was maltreated for always saying the truth.

Abusing the freedom of speech is a bad thing and it hurts to know that we can't just tell our honest minds anymore.

You remember Late Femi Kuti? We all know what he went through because of freedom of speech. Also, some people take the freedom of speech for granted. Like you said, they use it anyhow and they say things that they are not supposed to say.

Not just in Nigeria, but in all parts of the world. They took advantage of social media to express their freedom of speech and do other bad and unnecessary stuff just to get the attention of the world.

The people abusing it are strengthening the government because they will use the excuse of those abusing it to silence those who are using it genuinely.

People must be given their rights to have a freedom of speech. That was harsh and disappointing.
