My Past Week on My Eye (Part I)
I think I will reveal somethings you don't know about me. I feel it's time to just get them off my chest. Probably won't be much in Part I but definitely in Part II.
So last Friday I began to have some vision problems. My sight started to become blurry and even dark at times. At first I shook it off by thinking I was just fatigued, after all I had already logged close to 60 working hours already to this point.
Saturday, I did some fishing in the morning. Did quite well btw. I gave some fish to a business friend in exchange for a rain check on food. This friend owns a Sushi restaurant. I told them I would be in later in the week to collect. Heads up, I never stopped in to collect :-(. Later in the evening I did my part time work which is delivering food primarily. Once I got off I noticed the vision issues again. Mostly the same as Friday.
Sunday, I spent about 9 hours doing my delivering job. I did well and that felt great. This time my vision was showing signs a few hours into my shift. Prior to this my vision was only acting up towards the evening. I was thinking oh no I have to go see the eye doctor.
Monday, the start of a new week. I had took the week off in advance to get a lot of delivering in to maximize some extra cash. I had to go into work to drop off the work phone because I was the fortunate one to be on call the week prior. I talked with my piers and my boss about my vision changes. I discussed I would be making an eye appointment to have it looked at.
It was about 8:00, I called the eye doctor and they scheduled me to come at 10:00 with a retina specialist. I was thinking this couldn't be good my symptoms warrant a specialists. A little back ground, I had 3 surgeries already in this eye in the last 15 months.
My first was for a worn cateract. We get older this happens and is considered a normal procedure. It was determined after a hemorrhage in the back of my eye cleared that the surgeon had miscalculated the placement of the new lens. This was about eight weeks after surgery.
Second surgery was for lens re-positioning. So the surgery was unsuccessful because the lens already become one with my eye. The surgeon couldn't remove because it could have caused more damage to my eye. This was pretty depressing and I struggled with it for a few weeks until I realized things could be worse. I got my third surgery about 3 months later.
The third surgery was lasik surgery to correct my vision from the off placement of the lens. Well this surgery was successful and had no issues until now (about 4 months later). By the way, I got the second and third surgeries for free.
Alright I arrive at eye doctors at about 9:40. I checked in and was seen shortly before 10:00. I had to do the look around test while the specialist shined what seemed like a miniature sun into my eye. This was torture and went on for a good 10 minutes or so. The tears were flowing because of my sensitivity to the light. I was given several breaks to wipe them with a tissue. Once this was over the specialist told me my retina was close to being detached. She said I will need emergency surgery either today or tomorrow. I had not eaten anything since the day before and only had coffee that morning. She left the room to see when they could do it. Oh I was crossing my fingers hoping for a morning surgery because I have somethings to do and I was hungry.
In walks the specialist and she tells me the surgery is scheduled for 5:00 later in the day. I was instructed to show up at 3:00 at the hospital the surgery was to be done at. This was only four hours away. I have to find a ride from someone. My wife is disabled and can not drive. So I called my boss and informed him of the situation. He said no problem and volunteered to be my ride.
I arrive at hospital with my boss. I sit in the waiting area for a good 15 minutes until I'm called. A nurse gets me and takes some blood from me. Im am wuss when it comes to giving blood, there was one time I almost passed out. After that I go to my pre-surgery area where I get into that all so revealing gown. I get my blood pressure checked, get an IV put in, get hooked up to oxygen, get numbing medicine and another what they refer to me as "You won't care". I than talk with the team of people who will be in the surgery with me.
Surgery time comes and im not thrilled but I'm not really all that nervous. The anesthesiologist administers a small amount to just knock me out for about 30 minutes. This is done so they can put the eye rack on me. I'll refer to it as the torture rack because this will be the worst feeling surgery I have ever endured. The surgery took about 90 minutes. I felt several hurting probes with needles and tools. I actually thought at one point aliens were there conducting test on me. About 30 minutes in I started to grasp my hands tightly and tightened up my arms and legs. I couldn't wait no longer I wanted this to be done. Another feeling came over me that I might turn green and turn into the Incredible Hulk. Well when it was finally over I did actually sweat during this surgery. I guess it was from being so tense with all the pain I felt.
To be continued ...
I hope my rant on this doesn't sound like a bunch of nonsense. Well this is my first multiple part article and hope you find it worth reading Part II. Thanks again for reading.
Oh my! While reading the surgery process, it feels like I also feel the pain. The anesthesia was only good for 30 minutes so the next 60 minutes you were feeling and enduring the pain. That was a torture for me and if I'm in your part, maybe I had collapsed already.
