Not all woman needed saving.
War eras are nightmares the whole world wants to forget. Every story embraces ones misery, affliction, and oppression. During Japanese occupation in the Philippines, inhumane treatments to Filipinos are evident. The immense number of people who died during this time is distressing. Filipinos experienced difficulty of coping and surviving thus shaking their cultural identity. There are also women who became sex slaves of Japanese army often called as comfort women.
“War was our marriage, and the guerillas our son”- Valeria Panlilio
Our independence was obtained not solely by the effort and bravery of men- women took part in the revolution with varying methods. It is common that a lady knows how to cook, clean, and tend wounds, but feeding and tending wounds of revolutionaries in great number is a different story. Aside from common chores, women become spies who walk through enemy’s chamber in pursuit of information that will help them. While men continue to fight the war, keeping the economy thriving through agriculture becomes women’s responsibility. Some also acts as writers, journalist, and educator who handled reports, letters, and propaganda materials. They also give advice regarding the decision making of the guerilla. While some women used pen, words, and capability to lead as weapon, others risk their lives in combat. They also engaged themselves in a lot of men’s work to provide their family’s needs. Women are fragile and less strong when it comes to physical attributes, but the fire in their hearts shouting for freedom became their greatest weapon to break the chains of the oppressor.

We all really should be thankful for all the things that women have done for our lives and for their sacrifices. Thanks for mentioning, by the way. 🙂
