Experience is the best way of learning as most people claim. It teaches us more about life than in school.
Two weeks ago, I posted about my chosen career back in college and it was about teaching - Theories Are Not Enough. I have talked about my experience during my OJT and practicum which was fun and successful.
When we finish schooling or if you choose to stop studying in school it actually doesn't stop there. Life is a long process of learning as we all know. So even if you are no longer in school you will continue to learn and educate yourself until our last day here on earth.
For example when applying for a job. You can not just start working in a company without undergoing training. In short you will still get educated on how things will be done in the position you applied for. Even applying as a construction worker or dishwasher have to undergo training education.
When you buy a product like gadgets or electronic devices or appliances what did you do first?
Even if I am electronically inclined, I always learn to read the manual first before using any device. These devices that need electrical power to operate are hazardous. There are only two things that will likely to happen if you do not read the manual or guide, it’s either it can harm people including you or the device might break due to lack of education about how it will work.
Life teaches us many lessons and we are accumulating those learnings everyday. Even doing your laundry, you learn that using fabric conditioner is best when washing clothes during the rainy season.
Sometimes when we do not worry about money we tend to buy things that we want but not what we need. Then you will learn that those things you bought but don’t need become a waste of money.
In school we only learn theories and few applications. Mostly we only learn the basics. Teachers only explain about the origin, history as well as the step by step process of certain lessons.
Most of these lessons we learned about life are not taught in school. Oftentimes these lessons are learned by making a mistake, error or failure.
Going back to the electronic device I have mentioned above, if you accidentally break the device when you are trying to power it on first. It suddenly sparkled and then did not turn on. This might be the case when you did not learn something about it from the manual. It could be that the device only needs 110VAC to power on and by plugging it directly to your wall outlet will certainly break because our standard home electric voltage is 220VAC.
Last Friday, my driver license was confiscated by a traffic enforcer due to a traffic violation. The reason was that I unintentionally crossed an intersection with a green light arrow going to the left. Disregarding traffic rules was my violation that will cost 350Php fine.
These traffic rules are being taught and explained during the theoretical driving lesson as well as during the practical driving course. These rules also are in the questionnaire during the examination when applying for a license to drive.
Just like the lessons in school we sometimes forget about these teachings that’s why we encounter mistakes and or make unintentional violations.
Sometimes we learn out of curiosity. Fire has a chemical composition of carbon dioxide, water vapor, oxygen and nitrogen. When we were still kids our parents told us not to play with fire because it’s deadly. Then when we entered school our teachers also warned us not to play with fire for the same reason.
When I was a kid that was the first lesson I learned. I literally played with fire and ended up having my right thumb burned. I found a paper with adhesive, the one in a cigarette pack. You know my father has a vice of smoking. I held the paper and lit it from a candle burning. When the paper was nearly burning my thumb, I tried to throw it away but it was stuck on my finger due to the adhesive and the rest is history.
However as we grow older we are still curious about putting things together because we wanted to learn about it in actual application. Even if we knew that we would get burned, we still played with fire. Sometimes we just can’t do it alone. We will conduct experiments with someone else and then get amazed by the things we learn. We learned that some things when put together had a bad tendency to explode.
Some lessons can be learned from other people. You know, teaching each other with what we learn and or sharing knowledge and ideas about life. It is of great help sometimes.
Most of the time lessons in life are the hardest. These lessons are the ones that make us a better person. It makes us strong. We become more determined to continue living. These lessons make our life meaningful.
There are so many lessons in life that I learned. I think one very important lesson that gave a great impact to my life was when I tried to ignore great opportunities in the past.
You know there are a lot of opportunities ahead, however , we never know when will they come? How long will you wait? When you can no longer continue to live?
