Who will save mother
Sometimes in 2015, I read about a story in a newspaper that happened in Lagos State, Nigeria. A sixty years old woman was down with a very serious kidney disease. She was already a poor widow whose husband had died a long time ago when her two daughters were just teenagers.
She had to undergo a major kidney transplant surgery that had to be performed in India and would ofcourse cost a lot of money. Her daughters who were now in their late twenties never left their mother's side through out the duration of her illness. Even though the two of them were already married with kids, they still spent most of the day with their mother, holding her hands. They cried for her , they prayed for her.
And when night comes, the girls would rather sleep on the hard hospital floor beside their mother's bed, instead of going back home to their families. By morning, their faces would look so puffy due to tiredness, with numerous spots of mosquito bites all their skin.
Their mother's treatment should have been completed some time ago but because of the family's inability to pay for the surgery, they just had to remain in the hospital. Both daughters and mother kept suffering every day and anyone who visited the hospital felt sorry for them.
At last, their situation was brought to the knowledge of the governor of the state at that time by some good Samaritans. Then governor visited the hospital and sympathized with them. He also promised to help them. The money needed for the operation was paid that same day and all was set for the procedure.
The only thing left which was also most important thing was a donor kidney. This ofcourse wouldn't cost much. All that was needed was somebody that would volunteer to donate a kidney to the sick woman. Most times, such a person has got to be from thesame family as the patient.
Since her two daughters was the only family that she had. A test was called conducted on both girls and it was found out that either of the girls would be able donate a kidney to save their mother's life.
But to the utmost surprise doctors, nurses and even the governor, the two girls were appeared reluctant to donate a kidney to save their mother's life even though the doctors assured them that a person who had donated one of her two kidneys would still be able to live a normal life till old age so long as the other kidney remained functional.
The two daughters were given a fourty right hour ultimatum to consult within themselves and make up their mind on who would save mother's life.
But none of the two girls agreed to donate a kidney out of their four healthy kidneys to help their mom. It was even reported they a fight almost broke out between the two of them. The older sister began accusing the other sister of being always selfish as she had done more for thier mother and it was now the turn for the younger one to help out. It quarrel degenerated and the two girls used hurtful words.
The whole situation became quite shameful and one begins to wonder weather these were the same girls that had been so devoted to their mother before the operation.
In order to prevent the whole thing from getting worse more than it was already. The governor ordered the doctors to get another kidney for the transplant from somewhere else so as to save the dying woman.
The surgery was done successfully and the old woman recuperated gradually with her two daughters by her sides once again, Lol. One begins to wonder how the old mother would feel when she gets to know in the nearest future that her two daughters refused to help her when she needed their help the most. Especially when she's the kind of mother that wouldn't hesitate to lay down her life for her children .
......According to the words of the governor: "may our loyalty never be tested".
We all could claim we love someone dearly and would be able to do anything for that person, but when the time comes, one might realize that one wouldn't be able to go to such length before the unfortunate twist of fate. If we were asked earlier before the situation happened, we would make a verbal show of how undying our love is. Look within those you love closely, to what extent are you willing to sacrifice for them?
It is quite sad to know that you have by your side people who say they love you and when it comes to prove it, they give nothing at all of themselves to preserve the life of the one they profess love for.
