At the end of July this year, beautiful news arrived from the Vršac's Mountains. Booted eagle cubs (A. Pennata) are the new nesting bird of the Vršac's Mountains. This year, the nesting of one pair was confirmed, in whose nest are two cubs. The last registered nesting of this species in Vojvodina was more than 100 years ago.
Booted eagle (lat. Hieraaetus pennatus) is a medium-sized eagle from the hawk family (lat. Accipitridae), which nests in the wider area of southern Europe, in North Africa and parts of southwest Asia.
It is 42 to 49 cm long and has a wing span of 110 to 135 cm. It occurs in two phases of feather coloration (morphe): as light and dark morph. It inhabits habitats with preserved complexes of forests and open terrains (forest-steppes, valleys of large rivers, mosaic Mediterranean and sub-Mediterranean areas) in the plains and hills. It builds its nests on trees.
It is a typical migrant and spends the winter in sub-Saharan Africa and southern parts of Asia. Its main food is lizards, other reptiles and smaller rodents. Due to such prey, it inhabits areas where it is available, primarily rocky hills, mountains and the southern parts of the European continent. Like other species of birds of prey, it is endangered by habitat loss, disturbance during reproduction, rodent poisoning with rotanticides, use of chlorine-based pesticides, theft of eggs and birds from nests, etc.
The care of flora and fauna in the Vršac Mountains is taken care of by the nature conservationists of the PIO "Vrsac's Mountains" managed by JKP "Second Octobar" 365 days a year. I'm glad the eagles are coming back. They have been a protected species for many years, but unfortunately, due to the negligence and negligence of people, one species at a time is disappearing. Well done.
