I bet there are still people who are not aware of this syndrome and some may find it funny seeing people who physically look alike.. I hope this will give enlightment to others who are not yet aware of the abilities of people with this kind of syndrome ..

Down syndrome is a condition in which a person has an extra chromosome.

I have this notes in college about the myths and truth about Down Syndrome, hopefully you will read it until the end..

Myth:Down Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder

Truth:1 every 800 to 1000 births is a child with Down Syndrome, representing approximately 5000 births per year.

Myth:Most children with down syndrome are born to older parents

Truth:80% of children with down syndrome are born to women under 35 years of age. However, incidence of birth with it increases with the age of the parents.

Myth:People with this syndrome are severely retarded.

Truth:They have an I.Q that falls to mild to moderately retarded. Children with D.S are definitely educatable and educators and researcherz still do not know the full educational potential of people with down syndrome.

myth:people with down syndrome are institutionalize

Truth:Today, people w/ DS live at home and are active participants in the educational, social, and recreational activities in the community.

Myth:Parents will not find community support in bringing up their children with D.S

Truth:There are associations founded to initiate, develop, promote, encourage and support programs and projects for families of children with DS

myth:children with DS must be placed in separate education programs.

truth:children with DS can be mainstreamed into regular academic classrooms. In some instances they are integrated into specific courses;while in other situations, some students are integrated into the classroom for all subjects. The degree of mainstreaming is based on the abilities of the individual; but the trend is for full inclusion in the social and educational life of the community.

myth:Adults with DS are unemployable.

truth:around the world, businesses are seeking young adults with DS for a variety of positions. People with DS bring to their jobs enthusiasm, reliability and dedication.

myth:Adults with DS are unable to form close interpersonal relationships leading to marriage.

truth:People with DS date, socialize and form on-going relationship. Women with DS can and do have children, but there is a 50% possibility that their child will have DS.

myth:people with DS are perennially happy.

truth:people with DS respond to positive expressions of friendship and are hurt and upset by inconsiderate behavior.

myth:DS can never be cured.

truth:research in DS is making great strides in identifying the genes on chromosome 21 that affects DS. Scientists now strongly that it will be possible to improve, correct, prevent many of the problem associated with Down Syndrome in the future.

I hope this clears the perception of others towards people with this kind of syndrome.

I admire parents, siblings who show unconditional love and support to their child or sibling..They are exceptional, although they have physical and mental disabities, they are still human who have feelings too. They contribute to society whatever they can.

There are people who are normal physically and psychologically yet are problems to society..

Down syndrome is a condition in which a person has an extra chromosome. Chromosomes are small “packages” of genes in the body. They determine how a baby’s body forms during pregnancy and how the baby’s body functions as it grows in the womb and after birth. Typically, a baby is born with 46 chromosomes. Babies with Down syndrome have an extra copy of one of these chromosomes, chromosome 21. A medical term for having an extra copy of a chromosome is ‘trisomy.’ Down syndrome is also referred to as Trisomy 21. This extra copy changes how the baby’s body and brain develop, which can cause both mental and physical challenges for the baby.

these are the people with mental disorders caused by an extra chromosome, we normals have 46 while they have a copy of chromosome 21 that makes a total of 47 chromosomes,.people with down syndrome physically look alike but they have different potentials

Ohhh it's nice reading about this. Personally I really don't research a lot about this condition. I just learn when people tell me about it. But I have a question. Is it true that people with DS have a greater memorization skills than average people?
