World Mental Health Day has been celebrated since 1992 because there is an increasing obligation to talk about this problem and work on its solution. World Mental Health Day is celebrated every year on October 10 at the initiative of the World Mental Health Federation and with the support of the World Health Organization. organizations, in partnership with ministries of health and civil society organizations around the world.
Mental health implies a harmonious relationship in the person himself in the emotional, intellectual and social sense. Mental health is very important for the good functioning of each individual and society, because mental disorders not only cause a deterioration in the quality of life, suffering and alienation of sick people, but also create a huge burden on the whole community mediated by economic factors.
This year, the celebration of the World Mental Health Day is dedicated to suicide prevention. Every year, nearly 800,000 people take their own lives, while the number of suicide attempts is even higher. Every suicide is a tragedy that affects the family, and the impact on the community and the state has a long-term effect. Suicides occur throughout life and are the leading cause of death among young people aged 15 to 29 globally.
Who is at risk?
Although the link between suicide and other mental disorders (especially depression and alcohol abuse) has been proven in high-income countries, many suicides occur impulsively in times of crisis when a person is unable to cope with the stress of life, such as financial problems , severing an emotional connection or with chronic pain and illness. Also, the experience of conflict, disaster, violence, abuse, loss, and feelings of isolation are strongly associated with suicidal behavior. The suicide rate is high among people belonging to vulnerable groups who are often exposed to discrimination, such as refugees or migrants, LGBTI people and prisoners. By far the strongest risk factor for suicide is a previous suicide attempt.
Prevention and control
Suicides can be prevented. There are a number of measures that can be taken at the level of the population, group and individual with the aim of preventing suicide and suicide attempts. Prevention and control include the following measures: • reduction of access to means used for suicide (eg pesticides, firearms, certain drugs), • responsible media coverage, • implementation of strategic documents with the aim of reducing harmful use alcohol, • early identification, treatment and care of people with mental disorders and abuse of psychoactive substances, symptoms of chronic pain and acute emotional distress, • training of non-specialized health workers for assessment and management suicidal behavior, • Ongoing care for people who have attempted suicide and providing support in community.
What can you do?
If you have noticed that a person you know is suffering, if you suspect that he is losing the will to live, talk to him. You need to show her that she is not alone. Put yourself in that person's position and that will help you better understand what he is going through, and it will also help you react in a natural way. Be an attentive and impartial listener. Don't criticize her, don't moralize her, don't feel sorry for her and don't tell her what is best for her to do. This can close it and keep it away from further communication. It is important to show that you accept the person as he is.
Unfortunately, most people are very uncomfortable talking about suicide. In our culture, it is a taboo topic and society generally ignores the existence of problems. But the fact is that almost a million people in the world commit suicide every year. That is why you should not hesitate to offer help to those who need it! Sentences that can help talk to a person you care about who is thinking about suicide: • "It seems to me that you have been sad and unhappy lately" • "How are you feeling?" • "Do you ever find it so hard that you will never get better?" • "Are you thinking about death?" • "Are you thinking about suicide?" • "How would you do that?" • "When did you plan to do this?" • “Would you like someone to help you find another way out of it difficult situations? ”
It is important that we all understand that mental health is very important and that we must constantly take care of it.
