Opinion on the term “Filipinx”

Gender and sex should be studied because they are frequently used interchangeably even if they do not mean the same thing. A person may mistakenly allude to use the term ‘sex’ when they truly mean gender. It is important to understand the distinctions between these two terminologies. Being male or female is what we mean when we talk about sex. Both the biological variations and a person's function in reproduction play a part. On the other hand, ‘gender’ is a term that refers to the differences between males and females, both culturally and socially, that are associated with being feminine and masculine. It is not based on biology. Additionally, they are not based on physical attributes but rather on the attitudes and actions that people pick up from their culture. In essence, we are born with a gender identity—either male or female—and as we develop, we take on the gendered behaviors and features that have been imposed on us by our surroundings. Additionally, it is crucial that we comprehend sex and gender because they have an impact on what is expected of us as individuals and the reasons why it happens. Our perspectives and understanding of both our own personalities and the conduct and attitudes of those we often interact with are expanded as a result of grasping these self-knowledge notions.

An alternative to "Filipino," which is regarded as male, and "Filipina," which is regarded as feminine, is the more modern term "Filipinx," which is used by Filipinos who identify as LGBTQ, living in the United States and other Western countries. Nouns ending in "o" are typically considered masculine, whereas those ending in "a" are considered feminine. I believe there is nothing wrong with words changing through time, such as the use of the name Filipinx to refer to either a Filipino or a Filipina. The discussion surrounding this contentious phrase is undoubtedly very pertinent since it exposes both sides' arguments and draws them into a dialogue so they can learn about each other's perspectives. Numerous Filipinos have criticized the term "Filipinx," and many of them find it offensive. Some claim that supporters of this phrase are merely capitalizing on the current fashion since Latinos were the ones to originally use "Latinx" to refer to both Latinos and Latinas without regard to gender. Some would counter that Filipino is already a gender-neutral language. It is in the majority of cases. However, we must make this type of shift when we see the critical necessity to do away with gender discrimination in our language. I think it is unnecessary to be hostile toward the name "Filipinx," which promotes inclusivity and was coined with good intentions. Instead, I think it should be accepted. The term "Filipinx" was initially really strange for me because I am not used to it, just like other people who dislike the phrase. But to be quite honest, it is very absurd that so many people are outraged and furious over the use of an "x." Because Filipino/Filipina tends to come across as gender-biased in some circumstances and there is the presumption that there are only two genders, I believe we need to be more accepting of these linguistic shifts and sympathetic to genderqueer people. Both arguments have merit, but in the end, those who are passionate about the phrase and do want to use it don't necessarily have to do so when they talk or write because its proponents invented it as a result of their own experiences.

Finally, it should be respected when LGBTQ Filipinos living overseas use the name "Filipinx." Despite the fact that many people are still upset with the term's use of "x," I think we should acknowledge the motivations behind it. Furthermore, an alternative is only a substitute. It is an alternative that people who do not identify with this binary might use rather than replacing the labels Filipino and Filipina, which are currently in use. Therefore, everyone is not actually required to use the phrase "Filipinx" as a gender neutral term.
