Beauty and Health

Our society promotes a variety of ideals such as big eyes and fair skin which may vary from culture to culture. Miner (1956) examines how far people would go to achieve certain objectives, is rather shocking. The primary tenet of the Nacirema culture, according to the author, is that the human body is unattractive and prone to disease and debility (Miner, 1956). They carry out a number of rituals, rites, and practices every day because they believe the threats that are currently present to be harmful to their bodies. Their health is frequently in peril in order to uphold the cultural ideals. I find it nearly astonishing how much the folks in the Nacirema are fascinated by their mouths. They execute this oral rite because they believe that if they don't, they'll lose their teeth, bleed from their gums, have their jaws shrink, have their friends forsake them, and have their loves turn them down. It is the belief in the Nacirema despite the fact that it is unfathomable to many. Along with these specific "magical" powders, they perform a mouth ceremony in which they place a little bundle of hog hair into the mouth, which they then move in an organized set of actions. The ceremony is nearly difficult to understand because we hardly ever see scenes like these in our day-to-day, ordinary lives. They also engage in a variety of rituals that they believe will strengthen their bodies, even if the exercises they take could tear their own muscles, cause them to bloat, or otherwise harm their bodies. They do this mostly in order to adhere to the specific Nacirema values. These goals are almost beyond what a human being is capable of, thus they perform rituals like cutting their skin open, injecting liquids, and removing bodily tissues to alter the size of various body parts. This type of extremely exotic culture illustrates how, as a result of the ideals cultivated in their surroundings, human conduct may go to these extremes. They have standards that are nearly impossible to meet, which I believe is quite hazardous because they harm not just themselves but also their own bodies. Indeed, there is a connection between health and beauty since, most of the time, human health is put at risk in the pursuit of particular goals and aesthetic standards. By examining the Nacirema culture, Miner was able to underline the connection between the elements of beauty and health. To sum up, discovering the Nacirema culture has made me more aware of how severe human behavior can be when it comes to achieving socially prescribed norms. Given their tremendous concern with their bodies, some of their rituals are nearly impossible to accept. To become the best version of themselves, people reach the point when they cut themselves open or inject something into their bodies.
