The Educational System

He hadn't seen anything like it in twenty years of teaching, it was just so unexpected, surprising, and downright frustrating. He felt like the whole education system has been put to the test and it miserably failed.

In 20 years of teaching, he thought that he'd seen it all. He even taught at various schools so he knew that it wasn't environmental, it was just the abomination of the whole school system shutting down.

He taught high school, every single level, and every year of high school, and he handled kids of all ages.

He once has a student who was even older than him. The student just wanted to finish school and don't have any regrets in life so he enrolled himself where his kids go to school.

He doesn't have any problem with that. As a matter of fact, he admired the pupil so much that he valued education so much that he still tried to go through it when he was able and it doesn't matter how old he was. He admired the guy.

And of course, there was this anomaly, a kid so bright that he witnessed him skip grades.

The kid was just 9 years old and was already able to do complicated computations in integral calculus. For goodness' sake, the kid's past time was reading string theory. Something that he doesn't really comprehend. He teaches English and literature at the high-school level so he really doesn't have anything to offer when it comes to string theory.

That kid stayed for just a short period of time in their school. The kid had to be accelerated again because there was nothing more that the high school could teach him. They were just boring him actually. He was amazed by the kid's prowess.

He worries about the kid's future though. Skipping that many levels must be hard and difficult when it comes to forming one's personality, character, and attitude.

As he always believed as a teacher, he is not only accountable for teaching kids basic academic knowledge and skills, but they are also responsible to teach the kids to fit in with society as a whole. They're not shaping their intellects, they are also shaping the kids' overall personalities. And that's one of the reasons why he became a teacher, he wanted to touch the future in his own little way.

He also witnessed how pandemic could change every aspect of life including the education system. He had to somehow get into the program and learn how to use the computer effectively and efficiently. He knows how to work a computer, but he doesn't really know how to teach through the screen. He just used it before to do research, compute grades in it and make his lesson plan in it. He never thought that he would someday teach sitting in front of one with the kids on the other side of the internet.

And through all those experiences, he didn't really expect to witness cheating right in front of his face.

As part of the kid's module, he asked them to write a simple book review. And just at random, he asked a student about her work. While holding her paper, he was nodding while reading because the work seemed reasonably good. But when the student was asked to discuss what she thought of the book and her work, she couldn't say a thing. And as it turned out, she didn't do any of it, apparently, her older sister wrote it for her.

He knew that it would be possible, given that it's all online and all that, but he was really disappointed because of how irresponsible everything was. And he knew that there was only so little that he could do. He felt powerless and betrayed by the whole system.

Hiii!

This has been a freewriting article via The Most Dangerous Writing App. The app gave me a prompt:

He hadn't seen anything like it in twenty years of teaching,

And here's what I got with that single line. It was enough. It was okay.

So let me ask you some things now. As a student, or if you are an educator or something like that...

  • What was something that totally surprised you?

  • Changing years, from grade school to high school, or from HS going to college, what were your expectations for the new level of education? Did the reality meet your expectations?

  • How was your life in college different from when you were in HS or grade school?

  • What was the best level of education with regard to your personal experience?

  • Were there any unforgettable moments for each level of education?

  • What was your favorite part?

That's it from me and until we read again...

Cheers!!!

Most of the modules of the students were answered by their parents or siblings. It's so limited that they will teach the student properly.

ahaha ever since naman, sinasabi ko din sa lahat un, wala yan sa sistema ng education, F2F, online, nasa estudyante yan. Kung gustong matuto yan, kahit ano pang klaseng pagtuturo, matututo yan. Basta importante... gustuhin.

From high school to college, I was expecting for it to be much more harder. And it really is! Because the new normal made it one. I believe that face to face classes are more efficient since the students' attention in online classes are easily distracted.

yep. at least in the F2F setup, you'll be more creative when your attention is taken away because you don't want to be called out by the teacher so you do everything to just not get caught and in turn, you're being creative. :)

Online classes have both advantages and disadvantages. My brother, who is in grades 10 and 11, had an online class rather than a face-to-face class. My mother has saved a lot of money to give to my brother as an allowance. My brother answered all of his modules; I did not assist him. However, there will come a time when he will ask me a question about his assignment. On the negative side, some elementary school students had some of their modules answered by their parents, and those children did not want to study at home. They would rather play on their phone than complete their modules.

yep! it's a mixed up mess of pros and cons. I would love to take up extra classes if it's going to be pure online.

This is a sad reality of educational system today. Most of the modules of students were answered by their parents or siblings. It's so limited that they will teacg the student properly. That's why I am hoping that f2f classes will come back.
