How to Secure smartBCH Funds in Metamask Wallet

Every day we see new people joining in on the smartBCH sidechain journey. Many of them are used to the simple wallets and they don't like complexity. But unfortunately we are being kind of forced to make use of the metamask wallet.

I have written articles on how you can move your BCH to smartBCH. And also how you can connect to SmartBCH network from metamask. You can also read my article on bridge of smartBCH.

If you have followed upto the point where you have the smartBCH network connected and also the smartBCH stored in your metamask. The next thing that you would be doing is taking care of the wallet. Unfortunately we don't have any external wallet or app for the smartBCH other than metamask.

So protecting your metamask on the browser and the app on mobile would be something you may have to do as you continue to hodl your tokens or the coins in general.

If it's your hard earned smartBCH tokens or the coins then you may definitely want to secure and cover your funds in the metamask. So here I want to cover some of the good practices that you can follow for securing your funds in smartBCH in the metamask. Shared Computer & Shared Browser

Are you sharing your browser with family or friends or someone from the office? I know this happens at home, or office or school or places where the public opens the content in browser. If that's the case then you should consider making a choice to do things that would secure your wallet.

Make sure to lock your app when you are on the shared computer or the shared phone. This way every time you use the app you have to use password or the phrase in order to get in. And that would add one more layer of the security to the wallet.

Backup Phrase or Keys

Make sure to backup your wallet and it's phrase. Some of the time you may also want to export your private keys and make sure to get a backup for the same. I know many who have managed to get a backup and secured when they could not find existing application usable and so they ported.

This is handy especially when the computer is lost or when you find it formatted or damaged state. In such case having your own phrase and keys exported helps a lot. So make sure to do just that it would help you.

Strong Password

You may notice that for those who have small set of passwords, end up losing the funds. That has happened to many who keep the guessable passwords. And when you choose the strong password you get one step ahead of those attacks.

I am going to say that you should also make use of the password managers and this way just remember one master password. You can use the lastpass or the keypass which does your job easier for remembering the password across specific wallet and the websites.

Lock Wallet

Metamask has the feature of locking the wallet. You can also set the timer for the auto lock. So both of these features collectively can help you get the wallet more secure as well. I think this one step alone can save you from basic wallet manipulation.

Locking your wallet also saves you time when you are not looking at your device for long enough. That way you are assured that you are being protected when your focus moves away.

Hardware Wallet

There are some of the hardware wallets that support metamask links. And so you can take the private keys off the metamask and move the funds to the hardware wallet. As of now trezor seems to be one option that can do this but I am sure there must be other option too.

There is also keystone and Ledger wallet that I assume also supports the hardware wallets link with the metamask. Once you move the funds this way, it's lot secure as well.

Additional Security

You can enable the phishing detection in the metamask or any other wallet where you move your Ethereum funds. I know many who enable such supported feature and avoid getting the attacks too.

Avoid making use of the beta channels for the software and this way you won't be getting any form of the buggy software and may not lose the funds this way. There are some of the hardware wallets that offer you the features to enable the alert that can give you an idea of the wallet movement. And that pretty much helps with the security.

Conclusion

Metamask is currently the only option we have for the smartBCH but as soon as the trustwallet and other wallets come out for the smartBCH sidechain. I am sure we can easily take care of more of the wallet based on it's respective holding wallet.
