The Alpine Lake with the only Slovenian island has been a cosmopolitan place for centuries, impressing with the beauties of nature, stories of the past and special powers to restore well-being. Look at the lake from the castle on the cliff and go to the island with a traditional boat - pletno.

What is a pletna?

It is a wooden vessel with a flat bottom, designed after the Venetian gondola, but it also has its own peculiarities. The harness ends at the bow with a pointed end, and is extended at the stern with a sill that allows passengers to enter. The boat is 7 meters long and 2 meters wide and ensures safe navigation for 18 people. It is powered by a special "stehrudder" technique, standing and with two oars.

The equipment is not from Bled Castle, but it is important for illustrating the housing culture in the periods he spent. From the upper courtyard, the path leads to the castle chapel, the smithy, a souvenir shop and a restaurant.

Explore a charming island, count the stairs and make a wish at the wishing bell.the famous staircase consisting of 99 stone steps. Even today, the old custom is that the groom must carry the bride up all 99 steps if the couple wants to get married in a church on the island.

The most recognizable symbol of the island is the Church of the Mother of God on the lake with a long and varied history, but behind the lush greenery hides several interesting island buildings such as the bell tower, chaplaincy and prostitute, a small desert and some mysterious legends.

The bell of desire is loved by many visitors to the shrine who make a pilgrimage to the island. When they ring the bell, they commend themselves to the Mother of God and, in faith to hear them, hand over their wishes and requests.

The driver of such a carriage cannot be just anyone, as the profession is passed down from generation to generation. The son inherits it from his father, the latter from his father and the latter from his own… Members of the Bled Carriage Society strive to preserve the entire tradition, including the uniform they are very proud of. We can recognize the Bled carriage in a black jacket, trousers and hat, a white shirt, a vest with embroidered Gorenjska carnations and burgundy red blankets and jackets from afar.
