Education Should Prepare One For Life
21-Sep-2o22
Hello readers!
This is my second article, and in this article i will be discussing about education and how education can help us in developing our personality!
so without further ado lets discuss about it.
"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."- Nelson Mandela
The aim of education is to help the development of the potentialities of an individual. The individual must be allowed the fullest development of his personality. According to D.H Lawrence there is an individual a spark danger that needs to be suppressed. All desirable qualities are to be allowed to blossom fully so as to enable the individual to lead a full life. Apart from the 'G' factor, general ability, that is, the individual has certain special abilities like the musical, artistic, spatial, etc. Although an educational system aims at the development of both these abilities, there is considerable emphasis on general ability.
An individual should also have acquired, on leaving the portals of a school certain virtues like truthfulness, honesty, discipline, selflessness, and responsibility. In our mundane world, education is equated with getting a job and there are enough reasons to justify this view. An educated man should know at least one field with thoroughness so that he can obtain a job for which he is suitable and by which he can contribute to society. An educated person should be able to communicate effectively and for him the knowledge of another language will be an asset; this will broaden his understanding and widen his look.
Education should enable an individual to be adaptable, for we are living in a world of bewildering change. Education should also prepare a man to become involved in larger relationships. Education should help an individual to develop an inner richer life and a wide range of appreciations and inner controls.
What is meant by "being educated"?
To some people 'being educated' means getting through school and college and getting degree of some kind. Needless to say, this attitude, if it represents a serious position, is quite mistaken. Mere possession of diploma- or any other symbol, for that matter- is no proof of education. what education should impart to one is the ability to tackle problems, to earn ones's livelihood, to be able to live in a changing world, to be cultured, to be sensitive and responsive to the spiritual values of life, or in other words, to be prepared to face life.
Education should prepare one for life. That is to say, the educated man should have certain capabilities. First of all, he should know at least one field with some thoroughness.
Secondly, he should be capable of communicating with others. In other words, education should equip him adequately to speak and write his native language with a high degree of competence. It is highly desirable that an educated man knows at least one language besides his native tongue. Knowledge of a foreign language enables a person to learn about a foreign culture; this will extend the range of his sympathy as well as broaden his understanding. only through communication we are able to acquire the understanding of our rich culture heritage so essential for the development of the individual.
Thirdly, education should prepare one to get along with others. living co operatively with other individuals and groups is one of the major problems of our age. The history of civilization is in part the story of mans learning to become involved in larger and larger relationships. The progress of the "we" concept from family to tribe, tribe to clan, clan to nation, and nation yo world order is part of his development. We need to learn to be interested in others, to be able to entertain them, and to live peacefully together. To be educated is to achieve an understanding of the statement, "We are members of one another." This is the problem of all group living.
We need a new emphasis on the right to live. If a man does not become interested in the vital rights of other men and stand ready to defend them, he will soon find his own interests and rights endangered.
Conclusion:
The statement, "Education should prepare one for life," if understood in a broad sense, means full development of personality. That is to say, education is to confined to the learning of the three R's which also prepares one for life. Mere learning of the three R's , namely, airthmatic, reading, and writing, equips the person with the wherewithal of earning his bread. But education is much more than learning to get into a profession or training oneself to earn ones living. It is also personality development, character formation, and cultivating the capabilities of facing the problems of life with equanimity and tackling them.
