Agriculture and technology in the 21st century has made us individuals to be more dependent on it. The two became the ruler of our lives, where every actions we do rely on it. Both were important to us, love it or hate it, technology and agriculture affect almost everything we do today and will also affect most of our plans for the future. And constantly, we are enjoying the benefits of having these in our lives. But why do we need agriculture and technology?
The evolution of technology brings changes and impacts to our society and every individual uses and enjoying the benefits of it. Technology is the science of craft. It gives and leads us to convenience. Technology has simplified the access to many tools people need especially in agriculture. Machine nowadays were made most specifically to imitate us humans to do a task. Everything were personalized and individualized. However, using it too often has its disadvantage as well. Its rapid advances have changed life for worse in a number of different ways. We are addicted to instant gratification. We want things to be easy and fast, we hated so much work. We are eager to create new technologies that would help us to make our lives more convenient. We became greedy, hungry for innovation without living. Innovation destroys us; we are slowly dying. We are not in control of technology because it is the one that controls us. But applying technologies to agriculture would change the thoughts we had. Technologies help a lot in agriculture especially the advancement of it in producing our necessities.
Agriculture is the backbone of our economy where it supplies our necessities. It exists in the state of agricultural evolution. In this era of innovation, technology helps in making a strong economy where the modernizations for the betterment of agriculture came from the application of innovations. Agriculturists nowadays have the opportunities to apply ideas into their operations and other businesses. There are a lot of ways to apply new technology in the farm making them excited to discover more from it. Different machineries for the productions of goods were developed, but still needed for more improvement for its efficiency and the driving force behind change has remained the same: increasing in population and scarcity of lands. Everything we need for agriculture is available but still the supply for our necessities fails to respond the demands of the people. There are currently over 7.3 billion people in the world and that’s a lot of people to feed. Hence, population pressure and a scarcity of land encouraged the transition from hunting and gathering to modern agriculture.
The change and advancement in the agriculture system helps to provide safe, nutritious food to people. Farmers use technology to make advances in producing more food for a growing world. Through the use of technology, each farmer is able to feed more people today. Farmers use technology that allows for improvement in agriculture. Better technology has allowed farmers to feed more people and requires fewer people to work on farms to feed their families.
Changes in equipment have made a large impact on the way farmers are able to farm and grow food. In the past, farmers would have to do field work by hands or with horse-drawn equipment. This work would take a long time to complete, which meant that farms were smaller because farmers could only work so much land. Horses were not very fast and since they were animals, they would get tired and need rest to recover from their hard work.
Today, most of the farmers use tractors and other motorized equipment to help with field work. Tractors, combines, plows, etc. are much larger and move much faster than horses, so farmers are able to produce more food in a shorter amount of time. These machines still need to be taken care of because they can breakdown just like cars, but they can run for longer periods of time and doesn’t required lots of recovery periods.
Technology has changed our agriculture for good but we can’t remove the consequences of the modernization it brings. In fact, its application has a direct impact to our nature. These problems with regards to agriculture are addressed and solved by the people who are responsible and literate in agricultural fields which we lack as of now. We don’t have enough people who are literate in agricultural fields. We lost the ones that need more attention; we forgot the ones who can help to improve our agricultural production rate but lessen the negative impacts of our nature at the same time.
One thing remains the same about agriculture today as it did centuries ago: majority of the farms are private and farmers are working hard to bring the most affordable and healthy food from their farm to your dinner plate and for their family. Let’s be responsible and be a help to those farmers that were struggling just to comply for our demands.
