Can you imagine a robot playing a musical instrument?

A programmable computational device can be loaded with musical logic and can be made to create a limited version of musical pieces.

  • Even in the 1980s, one could write program codes in a basic C programming language to produce frequencies corresponding to specific tunes.

I remember a student of MS Physics who was fond of Indian classical music. He wrote lines of C codes to run in a loop and play certain Ragas in the background.

  • Mind it, there was no audio device in the PC XT machines of the 1980s. The sound was produced like error beeps in the micro speakers that correspond to specific frequencies, i.e., notes, such as Sa, Re, Ga, and Ma which are known as Do Re Mi Fa in the western musical system.

That was big learning in college. After passing oit, the MS student joined a software company in Pune, India and initiated their computational music project. The same software company is CDAC, which is owned by the Government of India.

Toyota robots can be programmed to play musical instruments.

In Japan, the robot market is very active in testing and releasing new models of interesting robotic devices. Even in the year 2000, we saw plenty of cheap robots in the market. Those were toys but got superior designs.

Recently, Toyota demonstrated a robot that can play the violin. Of course, the robot plays only the musical lessons and pieces that were saved in the memory. The robot can have limited interaction with the audience.

Japanese society is very much loyal to their ancient culture of music and hard work. Maybe, the young generations are interested in machine magic. They may explain and utter sounds of awe, "So desu ka!" (Is it real!). The elderly people may only say "Omosiroi" (interesting).

What next?

Robot and automation experiments are fun.

People gather at the electronic fairs of robotic toys. Both young and old look at the stunning demonstrations of different varieties of robots.

  • I am slightly confused about what would be the use of the musically trained robots.

  • Are modern humans moving toward a lazy world of "every work being done by machines?"

Humans are probably moving toward the pathetic demonstration of the eating machine in the Charlie Chaplin film "Modern Times."

Concluding thoughts

  • Robotic automation is a subject of much interest at the current time.

  • Deep logical thinking is essential to decide what areas of life to automate and what to carry on with experienced human labor.

A balanced human intervention and supervision are necessary for robot usage.

Moreover, fine art and performing arts are more suited to human creativity. I could not say that going for robotic artists may not be the right strategy.

Indeed it is a very interesting topic as usual. I love your articles I always read that at the time I ma free and can fully focus on it.

In my point of view, where robots have making works easy, on the other hand one robot disqualifying from 2 to 10 human, as the job the can be or could be done by many humans can be done by only one robot. For some people it's good but for workers it's.... You know

Thanks for such a great topic

Robotic applications should be tried to improve work. Robots should not be used to kill human jobs.

Nani! Robots playing music that's 'sugoi' but I will always prefer a person playing it no matter which era it is!

Robots are good to make life easier and more convenient but to replace our creativity and artistry, I don't think that's too much. A robot that plays a violin is okay I think because you are to program it to play certain music anyway. It would still be a long way to develop robots that can play music on their own or even compose music on their own. Playing an instrument is more appreciable with the human factor especially the expression on their faces and body languages which robots lack.

Artistry is not the right application that robots may be deployed. I agree with your view points.

That's surprise for me that a robot doing such a work and now looking that future would be in the hand of the robot if such technology doing good work

Oh. The world is so advanced now. There's no doubt, that the world will be taken over by robots in the future hahaha. I hope the machines will only help people and not destroy people. This made me interested in robots. I should watch videos about it to feed my curiosity 😁

Never knew this before, surprised to know this looks like future would be in the hands of robots as now they are capable of almost doing everything

Wow, so cool. And I'm not surprised that Japan is a producer of robots with a variety of the best experiments and there is no need to doubt it. It's also amazing if smart robots massage our bodies when we're tired.. Hahaha and that's fun.

Yes, robotic massage is very much possible and would be in demand in the market.

I was speechless my friend. This is my first time to know about this, a robot playing an instrument. We are deeply in modern generation now.
