An intro to Nigeria's political situation
It is an interesting time in my country as major political parties are trying to nominate a candidate for the upcoming presidential election.
My country practice a multi party Democratic system and there is no limit to the political party that can contest an election.
But right now there are only two major political parties in the country. The rest can be described as minor parties with little or no position held in either state or federal level.
Currently the ruling political party is APC (an acronym for ALL PROGRESSIVE CONGRESS) and the main opposition is PDP (People's Democratic Party).
Prior to 2015 election, PDP had been the party in power, it lost the presidential election to APC, not only the presidential seat but a lot of state came under the rule of APC.
PDP also suffered a political blow in the legislative arm of governance as it lost, its majority in both the house of senate and the house of representatives.
Significance of 2015 Election
The 2015 election was a major political landmark not only in Nigeria but in the continent of Africa as a whole.
As It would be the first time in Nigeria that an incumbent government lost its re-election bid and also the first time power would be transferred from a sitting government to the opposition party peacefully.
Most countries (including my country) in Africa are riddled with weak democratic institution, lack of transparent elections and high level corruption.
So the victory of the opposition and the acceptance of defeat in 2015 by the incumbent was a rare feat in Africa. It was beacon of hope to other democratic African countries. It shows that African countries can develop to be truly democratic.
A lot of hope were placed in then opposition party (APC) as they took over governance. But after spending 8 years in power there is little or nothing to show for it.
Another major election
This time again, Nigeria would be going into a general election in 2023. And a lot of razzmatazz have being going on about who would be the flag bearer of the two major political parties.
The next year election is as important or more important than the 2015 election.
Nigeria is still beleaguered with a lot of tribal and religious sentiments. Just like many developing countries in Africa and Asia.
After many years of military rule and little taste of Democracy. The democracy we now enjoy now was restored in the year 1999. So Nigeria can be described as a child when it comes to practicing democracy. We still have a lot of journey ahead.
Prior to the 2015 elections many foreign bodies predicted that Nigeria might get splitted and cease to exist as a result of the 2015 elections. But the election came and went and Nigeria still remained intact.
Although the situation in 2015 was far better than the situation now; as a lot of cries have been made by a lot of people who aren't happy with the situation of country. One of the major issues currently affecting the whole country is lack of security. Each day we hear sad and heartbreaking news of people either being killed or kidnapped.
With all these security problems in some part of the country. I still wonder how the 2023 elections would be held and whether the country would be able to withstand not breaking up.
My wish
My hope for the country is that this upcoming election won't result into a civil war as many stakes are high. I wish for a peaceful and transparent elections.
I have a lot to say about this coming election and my country in general, but I think I would reserve them for another publication.
I hope my article has been quite explanatory enough to give a glimpse of the complex political situation in my country.
