There are many things that demands for our response in our day to day activities, most of these things are what we can see, what we have understanding of and what we can interact with, but if we fail to interact well and give a defined response, it simply means that we are not be able to stand up from our sleep and slumber.
There are both physical and spiritual sleep, you should take cognizance of this notice that human being are subjected to two type of sleep. Nobody will shout at you to wake up, if you are sleeping after your daily job. Nobody will shout awake when you complete your assignment as expected with the right time attached. This is a very strict command from the word of God to everyone reading and the pitch of this saying is not low at all. You know what it means when you hear the word "awake, O sleeper". It means that you should wake up from your sleep and slumber.

The scripture was talking about wickedness, this simply means sin. They were doing all kind of wrong things, even though and it has become very intense that it has become unacceptable to God anymore.
"But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went on board, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD." -Jonah 1:3
Most of the times when we found the commandment of the Lord is different to what we love to do, we will likely run away from His commandment. Jonah was considering that God should not show mercy to the people of Nineveh. He want them to be destroyed. He was thinking in his mind that if he should run away to Tarshish, God will not be able to talk to him anymore, he forgot that God is omnipresent and he cannot run away from the creator of both heaven and the earth thereof.
One thing that is constant about people that God used is that he always give them the opportunity to show themselves as son of God. And God has never changed so far, he is the same yesterday today and forever. In the case of Jonah here, he got the chance to prove himself when the storm started. It was recorded that wind was upon the sea and all those who are in the ship started throwing their goods into the sea and even the worship idols tried their power but it doesn't work.
Though Jonah went to sleep, when the storm was very strong and they fid not know what to do anymore and the captain of the ship was wise enough to know that at least everyone in the ship have the God or gods they worship individually, so he went to call upon Jonah. And he said in the verse six as quoted.
He boldly declared his Identity but did as it was given in the verse nine but he if he had started preaching in the ship that everyone should turn away from Idol and turn to God, they would have done that and the storm would have stopped.
Though, he finally gave them the solution but there would have been more people to convert. We should cease some opportunities in our live to preach the word of God to people. It could be a way of blessings.
