Maintaining good oral health.
Have you ever experienced mouth odour, it's something that is very embarrassing to have as humans. Many people are afraid of speaking or communicating when they are with people or friends because of their bad mouth odour. Oral health is an integral element of general health and wellbeing, including quality of life. Oral health may affect quality of life in many ways, an unhealthy gum or aching gum will cause trouble and pain for whoever have it. Mouth odour occurs as a result of bad oral health. This can limit an individual's capacity in biting, chewing, smiling, speaking and psychological wellbeing.
Our oral health is very important because our mouth is one of the essential parts of the body, it carries other parts of the body like the tongue and teeth. To enjoy our meals, enjoy overall quality of life, have a good self esteem and a stable social confidence, a good oral health is essential. Healthy gums and teeth make it easy to eat well and enjoy good food. There are different oral diseases that can occur due to mouth odour. Some of them include: Toothache, tooth decay, oral cancer, mouth sores, tooth erosion etc. Proper brushing can prevent tooth decay.
Many things can cause or lead to oral diseases and these may include;
1. POOR ORAL HYGIENE.
Some people have poor oral hygiene that eventually affects their oral health. Some won't brush their teeth at all, while some do not brush their teeth properly. And if teeth is not properly taken care of through brushing, it can lead to tooth decay or gum disease.
2. UNHEALTHY DIET.
What we eat can also cause oral diseases. People fond of eating sugary foods or junks can expose themselves to oral diseases. Chewing gums continuously will affect the teeth later in the old age.
3. CHRONIC DISEASES.
These include cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes and respiratory diseases. All these can cause oral diseases.
4. Smoking and drinking of alcohol may have a tendency of contributing to bad oral health. The mouth serves as a passage, so it is very easy for disease to penetrate through smoking and drinking.
Oral disease can have many effects such as pain especially if the gum is affected. There will also be discomfort which may cause sleepless night for the victim. The discomfort may also leads to limitation in eating leading to poor nutrition. This is to show that our oral health is very important and should be taken care of.
Maintaining and taking care of our oral health can be in these ways;
1. Brushing our teeth twice daily with a toothpaste that has calcium. Calcium help our teeth to stay healthy and be strong.
2. Another way to maintain our oral health is by replacing or changing the toothbrush every three or four months.
3. Eating a well balanced diet and limiting junks. Junks can contribute to bad breath and should be limited or avoided totally.
4. Having regular dental check ups, at least every six months.
5. It's also important to decrease sugar intake to prevent tooth decay and premature tooth loss.
Taking care of our teeth, gums, and mouth contributes to our overall health.
