I like to 'shoot' the birds I see in my yard, and these are the 5 kinds of woodpeckers I have been lucky enough to see here. #1. Red-bellied woodpecker #2. Red-headed woodpecker #3 Yellow-bellied sapsucker #4. Downy woodpecker #5. Northern Flicker All of these shots are male, with the possible exception of #2, male and female red-headed woodpeckers have the exact same plumage.

♫ Some like it hot so let's turn up the heat 'til we fry ♫ These two nutballs (Emoci top, Scar bottom) would rather sit outside---92 °F/33 °C with a heat index of 105 °F/41 °C ---than come inside where it is much cooler with the A/C currently running. I guess they'll come in before they get too hot---I never did care for baked cat. #cats
Sunday morning waiting for the sun to arise. Mama Coon and her two babies were out front again this morning, but I decided not to bother them with the camera. Still a bit too dark to shoot video outside or I'd drop a YouTube link - Petey or Emoci or Scar has hunted a mouse down and all three are outside terrorizing it. Petey is a most excellent hunter, rarely a day goes by that he doesn't catch something. Well, it's still too early to smoke any weed, that would just put me…
There are some photos that simply beg to be turned into some type of meme. But you know what they say - "Life's a bench." And 'moci does ♥ her bench. #cats
So today is the 246th anniversary of the day the USA officially announced its independence from the British Empire with the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Depending on who you talk to, we (the US) are either a success or a complete failure. But its our birthday so shut up and give me a piece of cake. :-P
This Northern Cardinal and I have something in common, we're both bald. lol It's molting time for the cardinals and I've had several (both male and female) show up recently that look like someone's been yanking their feathers out. Fortunately this is something natural and new feathers will grow to replace what it lost. UNfortunately my hair doesn't work that way. ☺
There are these people that simply trying to communicate with them can wear a person down---quickly. They have severe trouble recognizing reality from what they insist (falsely) happened. Even when shown evidence - written by their own hand - that the tale they are telling is not true, they still insist it happened. Most times I just toss my hands in the air and walk away, but sometimes you can't walk away due to responsibilities. This can make 30 minutes seem like 30…
Rockin' to the beat of the 'rythm' of life...
I love seeing these coming towards me down the highway, but having a top road speed of only 30 mph/48.3 kph means I did not enjoy being stuck behind it for 6 minutes on the highway yesterday. For those unfamiliar, this is a crop sprayer.
Just a little bitty thing---I almost didn't see it, there was a tiny pinpoint of sunlight reflecting on its abdomen that caught my eye when I was sitting on my front porch.
Shot this in the flower bed out front this afternoon. The second photo shows exactly how small this spider is. This is a Venusta Orchard Spider, an extremely small orb-weaver. This is the second time I have photographed one, a few years ago I had one living in my truck for a couple of days. Olney Illinois USA
4:30 A.M. visitor in the front yard, busily looking for dropped seed at the base of one of the bird-feeder poles. I stood watching from inside for a minute or so before I started shooting video (quietly opened the screen door and stuck the camera outside for a better shot) and all was fine until I spoke to the cat sitting next to me on the floor, then ol' Skunky high-tailed it for greener (or at least quieter) pastures. 20 second video of it feeding until I open my mouth.…
Japanese beetle on the front screen door. Very pretty bugs with highly a iridescent carapace, but unfortunately also voracious eaters that can quickly destroy rosebushes and other ornamental plants/flowers.
Ol' Baldy dropped in again today. I'm not sure how long it will take for his feathers to grow back. Also had a normal male Northern Cardinal drop in at the feeder.
I'm really beginning to lean towards black & white for some photos. At times color is necessary, such as if I want to show photos of a red-headed woodpecker and not a black-headed one, or most flower photos, but there are many instances when a b&w photo actually fits the subject better. My female cat Emoci (pronounced M-O-C and stands for 'My Other Cat') #cats
Could someone please come over and re-teach my cats how to act like cats? It was bad enough when Emoci started Squirrel-watching but now Scar and Petey are doing it as well.
When you glance out the front door and almost shoot coughee out of your nose. Lord I wish we could post video here, because ol' squirrel realized it was in a predicament and started trying to figure out a way past the line of cats to its tree. It did finally make a break for it - and all three cats just sat and watched it run away. lol I'm editing in a short (6 seconds) video link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YPDa9bnG8M #cats
'Breakfast Time' earlier this morning out at The Squirrel Tree™. Had the usual gang of half a dozen or so young grey squirrels and one of the older neighborhood albinos. Shot from my front porch this morning July 16 2022 Olney Illinois USA
I can't help it, I like my humor to be on the dark side quite often. I've used the quote for 20 years or more, and I don't think I heard it from anyone else to begin with - but I could be mistaken. But I took the photo of the scope with a blank white background and came up with the rest on my own. Maybe I need to look for a job in advertising... Photo from Amazon, captioned by me.
People say "If you want people to like you, just be yourself". So I keep being an asshole, but it doesn't seem to do any good.
I was awakened at 1 AM by this racket coming through the bedroom window from my back yard. I stood listening for a few minutes, then got my camera (to dark to see anything but I could get the audio) and recorded for almost 10 minutes. Afterwards I took a flashlight and went outside, and all I could make out were FIVE sets of eyes glowing at me from about 30 feet/9 meters up in a tree. The general consensus seems to be this is actually raccoons. I had no idea they made…
Three of the young raccoons decided to come to the front yard and get a bite or two of some corn early this morning (4:30 AM). Per usual, as long as I stay on the porch, they do not mind me taking photographs of them. If you have never heard raccoons in action, here is a 45-second clip of them playing around in my back yard earlier (audio only, there is no light in the back yard). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBoUBuks5v0 #raccoons #wildlife
Not sure what happened but I had a squirrel show up this afternoon that is missing its tail. Pretty sure it won't survive long, that tail is a major part of how they keep their balance and also helps 'aim' when they jump from limb to limb. Poor thing. :-(
Weeding while listening to Guns N' Roses cranked extremely loud on the Megawatt Music Machine™. Heat index is currently 111 F/44 C at 11:30 in the morning...I'll do all my 'weeding' inside today.
Petey (left) and Scar have stationed themselves either side of a tree so the squirrels can't run around it to escape.
Okay, I've always thought these were gorgeous and I knew they were a lily but not what kind it was, and I STILL don't know because there are a couple of different types that look similar. But they are still gorgeous. Th stems are not strong enough to stand upright so I have to 'stake' them each year or they lay on the ground and the blooms get ruined. #lily #flowers
I'm not sure how much three bowls is in Celsius or Fahrenheit but I only have two more to go...
Hoping the third bud will bloom but it may not. I have three of these planted but only two grew buds, two from one plant and one on the other.
Just got face-slapped by facebook with a 7-day ban for suggesting "hanging the bastards by the ballsack" in regards to the Extended Car Warranty spammers. lol And of course I don't dare contest the ban unless I want it increased to 30 days (which has happened before). Oh well, I was starting to feel kinda left out seeing my friends getting vacations and nothing happening to me...
Scar, Emoci (M.O.C.), and Petey (P.T.) have each assumed their spot in the front yard from which to practice their Caturday afternoon catnaps. Scar, being Lord of the Universe, rests upon the porch 18 inches/46 centimeters above His loyal subjects. #Caturday #Catnaps #Cats
Not very good sleeping weather. It only cooled down to 86 °F/30 °C in the bedroom last night so sleep was rather fitful with much tossing and turning. I wouldn't have gotten any sleep if it wasn't for the fan on the nightstand. Normally I would have moved to the couch in the living room and turned on the A/C and slept there, but a severe price-hike in electricity made my bill shoot up from $47 one month to $78 the next, and that was without much usage of the A/C unit. Right…
Fuckin' facebook, I pay for an ad, they approve the ad and publish it, run it for two days and then tell me it is rejected for violating ad policies and stop running it, so I asked for a review of the decision and two minutes later get told my ad is (once again) up and running. Who the hell is running that place? They surely have no clue what they are doing...
Which is healthier, regular corn or unicorn? _________________________________________________ I have all these questions and no answers. It is like your friendly neighborhood Deity. I ask these questions, And all I receive is silence. So I listen for an answer in The Silence. And I listen SO hard my ears bleed. And still no answer is to be found. And so, cast adrift with no anchor, No port to call home, No beacon to follow, My mind wanders o'er the Universe... (Sorry, just…
A few of my Surprise Lilies (also called Naked Lady Lilies or Resurrection Lilies) showed up today, and the third bloom on my Stargazer lily opened.
Freaking spammers... "Am I speaking to Mister Judy?" Um, no, you are not. I am Mister Michael. I have never met a man named Judy. And you fools should realize there has not been anyone named Judy Ratcliffe since she remarried in 1980 and became Judy Weir, and you STILL cannot talk to her because she died in 2009. Anything else I can help you with this morning? *click*
I just recorded video of an honest-to-God UFO. Not at all what I was expecting to see today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cQUOa_NMr0
Reflections upon refractions in the night. Early morning thunderstorm dumped a LOT of rain all at once today. Some of the shots came out looking like blurred starfields high in the sky, but they are all simply reflections of the flash and refractions of the street light shining through it as it fell.
I must have told that sumbitch 8 times that I did not need nor want a new Medicare Gold card, there is nothing wrong with my old one. And he kept saying "That is why we are calling to replace your old card with a new card can I have the number on your card?" And I kept saying I do not WANT a new card, that if I needed a new card Medicare would send one to me. And he kept saying "That is why we are calling to replace your old card with a new card can I have the number on your…
Hopefully @Pantera99 sees this, they normally explain things so I can grasp them. One more confusing thing about cryptocurrency: I am told that our wallets hold the keys to our crypto, that the actual crypto is not in our wallet or on our hard drive---yet some guy in New Jersey supposedly threw out a hard drive containing 8,000 bitcoins he had mined---all the articles I have read mention 8,000 bitcoins *on the hard drive*, not the key(s) needed to access 8,000 bitcoins on…
I retired from running sound for live bands and sold my equipment January 20th, 2020. Due to COVID, the guy didn't come to get it until April 25th, 2021 (with the agreement I would come and do the equipment install later). Tomorrow, I am finally installing it. Oddly enough, it was 1 year 3 months and 5 days from the day he agreed to buy it to the day he picked it up, and tomorrow will be 1 year 3 months and 5 days from the day he picked it up to the day I am installing it.
The 'big' thing spammers do in the USA these days is 'spoof' the number they are calling from so it shows a different number to your caller ID, most normally a phone number that is currently not in use. Of course, the days of physical switchboard operators is almost completely gone, What's needed (and I wish I was a programmer, this would sell) is software that recognizes inactive/unused numbers and refuses to let the call go through the system to reach the person being…
A little bit of indica to ease Sunday afternoon on past. Got an unexpected $100 yesterday so this morning I went and picked up a few of these, 'disposable' glass pipes/hitters pre-loaded with .3 grams each. And I'll take a few tokes dedicated to the people that want to but (for whatever reason) can't. Keep the faith and perhaps some day...
