Hopefully @Pantera99 sees this, they normally explain things so I can grasp them. One more confusing thing about cryptocurrency: I am told that our wallets hold the keys to our crypto, that the actual crypto is not in our wallet or on our hard drive---yet some guy in New Jersey supposedly threw out a hard drive containing 8,000 bitcoins he had mined---all the articles I have read mention 8,000 bitcoins *on the hard drive*, not the key(s) needed to access 8,000 bitcoins on the blockchain...

What happen for the bitcoin being mined?
Yes, I suppose all these articles are wrong to say the hard drive contained the coins. The hard drive contained the software that allows users to mine and a file called wallet.dat that contains the private key, and information on transactions. Indeed, the coins are not in the wallet but in the blockchain. The correct thing to say in this case is that this guy is looking for his HD which contains the keys that grant him access to 8000 Bitcoins.
