Kalaripayattu
Kalaripayattu is said to be an oldest form of Indian Martial Arts practiced specifically in Kerala, located in South India. The name of this martial Art is kalaripayattu. "Kalari" means battle field.
This is in existence for more than 3000 years. A unique martial Art where two or more people combat with sharp weapons. They are even taught to attack instantly with bare hands. Just a miss, a long standing mark will be left in your body. In the olden days, people used to wear armour to protect themselves from attack. In the ancient period, this art technique was imposed in battle field.
Kalaripayattu is much recognised and unique from other martial arts. The reason being, the performer just twist their body on the whole in the air with the sword and weapon attacking the enemy. They swirl like a wind. The height in which they raise and fall to attack the enemy is unbelievable.
This tradition is still carried on, in most of the places in kerala. In the ancient days most of these art with hands on technique are taught by Guru. "Guru" meaning sage or a monk. The disciple starts this art in the presence of the spectators with the blessing of Guru.
The most famous ancient legendary dance Bharatnatyam and Mohiniyatam is said to incorporate with this martial art of kalaripayattu to make the dance more unique with different posture. Most of the dance steps and body movements incorporate with that of Kalaripayattu.
Our government for the first time initiated a plan in the year 2021 to open a school exclusively for Kalaripayattu in the capital city of the state. Their main aim being to attract foreigners who are more interested in learning and performing this art rather than our nationals.
