Why I chose Guidance and Counselling as my course.
“In many ways, life has presented us with something different from what we had planned and thought. Life is unpredictable, and we have no idea what might happen next.”
Princessbusayo
Every one of us has planned, and got prepared for some events in our lives, but along the way, things turned the other way round, and we find ourselves doing the opposite of what we ever wanted.
While growing up, I saw how I wanted to go to the University, I planned to study Business Administration, but I never knew this was how things would turn out.
Through this process, I learned about my love for teaching and writing. Both skills came out when I never expected them and I would say, God's plan came out greater than mine.
I did my first Jamb in 2012 and scored 221. I chose Unilorin (University of Ilorin) with the course “Business Administration” but I was not accepted. The only chance was for me to go to a College of Education. I might have gone to polytechnic, but I had no idea.
Without knowing it for myself, I learned that I got an admission to the Polytechnic after three years of study at the College of Education to study “Early Childhood Education”. I was too naive and didn't find someone to explain things to me.
After then, I went for my degree and was given Guidance and Counselling. I never wanted this course because of the belief of people that it was a simple course that is only given to those whose ability cannot carry other courses. They thought G&C is for dullard and a boring one, not until I got to the second semester (level 200), so I realized these people saying this doesn't know what's in it.
It was then that my love for this course began to grow because I was told that Guidance and Counselling were not what we thought it to be. It goes deeper than its ordinary meaning. There is more to this course than an ordinary person considers it in a simple way.
I was pleased to learn about this course and learn more about certain myths.
WHY DID I CHOOSE THIS COURSE?
Well, I never voluntarily picked this course, but circumstances made it possible. It wasn't what I wanted to study at the beginning, but it happened, and I can't change that. But, I ended up loving the course and would say it proudly when someone asks what course I'm studying or have I studied?
I am now a Graduate of Guidance and Counselling, even though I am still waiting for my results to be out, but I think, just like I said that it was God's plan, knowing how much I love to teach, and give advice and help young children.
First thing first, I want to say that, in my country, this course has been underrated because of some people who think and ask “what is the use of the course when everyone could just advise anyone going through a problem and that is it?”
I would reject that concept and say, this course is more than what you had seen it to be.
In the olden days, we know how Guidance and Counselling was, and how parents would sit their children down and advise them, or when a child is going through a problem, they wouldn't go deeper into finding the right solution, but resorted to going diabolical about it. They think that all issues are centered around being spiritual.
Now that the world has evolved and technology has been invented, you cannot continue to believe and suppose that every problem is spiritual. But not everyone wants to think so. Therapy must be done and some specialists and psychologists must be able to find the root of the problem.
Note that counselors are also therapists or psychologists because they always do the same job using theories and approaches.
A couple having problems in their home needs a good therapist to diagnose them and come up with the right therapy to test them. There is more to this course than to narrow it down to such a sense.
Guidance and counseling are really helpful for everybody, including children who need attention and focus on their studies.
You wouldn't want to say that a kid with a school issue is spiritual. There is a need for a professional school counselor or therapist to check the child's background, and trace his problem to find a solution to what is happening in his life.
Not all things calls for prayer and deliverance. All you need is the right person to help them heal.
Everyone experiences different problems in their lives, marriages, health, which would end up turning into depression, disorders like amnesia, dementia, psychopathy, delinquency, etc.
Only by tracing this problem to the victim's origin or past experiences would the victim receive the proper treatment and become normal.
Do you now see how this course is not easy or made for dullards?
Thanks for your time

Your story is exactly like mine, I didn't pick the course u'm studying now (fisheries), it picked me 😂 A lot of people keep saying why will I waste my time to study something for four years when anybody can do it within 6 months and I actually believd them but it was in my second year that I realize it was ignorance that made people talk that way, you have to go through something for you to know if it's valuable or not. It's just like someone who haven't eaten pizza before saying he doesn't like the taste because some people said they don't like it
