Nigerian Universities with their ways.

@Kristofferquincy It's time to contribute to your article made two days ago and I have a lot to say about the issue which I believe most of us here especially Nigerians would testify to it.

Disclaimer: This post isn't about talking bad about the Educational system in Nigeria but to make fun from it. I don't want to be sued thereafter 😁😁

I have attended and graduated from college of education in year 2015 and also furthering my degree in one of the Nigeria Universities and will be graduating soon by God's grace. I have experienced some weird system in school and most times, I feel like having a super power to favor myself and my friends but I don't see how possible it will be. It can never be possible sef because you just have to dance to their tune if you really want to study.

Let's dive into some of these weird things I have encountered so far......

THE ISSUE OF ACCEPTANCE FEE

I want to believe it is only in Nigeria that this fee is being collected. Like, I wonder why would they still ask us to pay for Acceptance fee when they were the one who brought out the admission process and are looking for students to take in. We then would be given admission and instead of collecting only school fees, they will want us to pay for Acceptance fee. Is it money for accepting us or what is it? I think this has to be curbed. Who is with me? πŸ™„ I know it is part of their "Ajemonu" (I think this is part of what they want to share among themselves)πŸ˜…πŸ˜…

ISSUE OF TEXTBOOKS

This one, they are cheating us and I just wish to have super power to fight them and won't implicate me. The fee would have been included in our school fees but we still get to buy course materials with our own money. I thought since we have paid for school textbook, all courses we are doing should be included in it instead of buying course materials with money we supposed to use for our feeding. The worst part is our parents won't even give us this course materials money except we use part of our pocket money.

I think @Olasquare was contesting to be a president someday and even wrote his manifesto in his article, can you just see through this Mr President? πŸ™„

ISSUE OF PROJECT

When we were allocated to our various supervisors and I and my friends were waiting for our supervisor after the day's lecture. Then we started talking about project. Some supervisors can frustrate the lives of their students all because they are opportuned to guide us through. I was like "Isn't project supposed to be part of our curriculum and since lecturers are being paid their salary, they are the ones to even hasten us to be fast instead of delaying us and even giving us tough time". There are some lecturers that would delay students in school just because of project even after graduating. This is bad though.

USE OF WIFI

I would want us to know that our schools are really cheating us and extorting money from us. How can I pay for Wifi and I still don't have access to it even in school. They have collected money from me and I still pay for subscription. 😬

CERTIFICATE COLLECTION

My friend was telling me that once you graduate and you didn't come to collect your clearance after a year of graduating, they will start topping it up with $2 (1000) per year. So that means if you wait for 4 years before coming to clear your certificate, that means you will be paying 4k ($8). The question is "What will the money be used for?" It will be shared among themselves.

For God's sake, aren't we free to come collect our certificate anytime we want? At least it's our own right and they should attend to us freely whenever we come and not asking us to pay for the years we didn't come for it. It's bad na πŸ˜”

AWARDING GRADES

This one is the worst of all of them. Like, how will it be for you to stay up late at night to read and someone who didn't study at all get a good grade than you? There are many lecturers who favors some students than the other. I believe we should be treated equally and according to how we perform and not helping the unserious ones in detriment to the real students who took their time and efforts to read hard for a course. Nigeria schools will not cease to amaze me because the system is controlled to favor some people over the others.

An adage goes thus:

He who knows the way, get it. Yoruba will say "Eni to mo way lo mo way".

We have some lecturers that they only want money. Once you can bribe them, you are free. And these kinds of students, it's so pity that they won't be able to defend themselves outside school because they didn't have time to study but to buy their way through all courses.

The list goes on and on but let me just put a stop here so the post doesn't get long.

Thanks for your time reading my article πŸ₯³πŸ₯³πŸ₯³

It's terrible how they charge students. And that the educational system has so many problems. In Venezuela, unfortunately, the situation is not very different.

Yes, it does happen everywhere.

I'm sorry to keep reading about educational mafias. They also exist in the universities of my country. Students buying exams to pass the assigned subjects without much effort.

Ofcourse, the same act isn't only in Nigeria but in all countries. They will never stop it until we have a good government who can curb them.

You just pointed out our universities problems and it is annoying.

I finished with second class upper and had to pay series of money during clearance, you hear them saying " this is a big result " and I ask myself if I am paying like this just for clearance then what would be the fate of distinction students.

A lot of things has to be stopped but the government are too busy stealing so they wouldn't bother much about things associated with education.

Can you imagine? Didn't you work for it? Even though your grade is even higher than that. In my school, it is so hard to give out first class even if such student deserves it. They will make sure to decrease the grade. Why? Aren't they proud to have their student excelling?

Do universities still force people to buy handout, when I was in the University, asides from first year I don't think I was required to buy text book, I think I bought the books back then because I was a JJC.. Sorry about the funds you use in buying the handouts and books. And the grading system I don't get it too...it is like they grade based on how they feel. There was one time I wrote a course , I got an A , I was really surprised because I just explained what I knew and understood but I did not define it according to text book way. My lecturer came to class and complained about that we wrote too much unimportant information, we should learn to write relevantly. My next exam with the same lecturer I decided since now I am sure of what to write, I decided to write relevantly, only to get a C, I went back to him and he said there wasn't any explanation to back up my point...can you imagine . Me personally at some point I just gave up on the grading system, they should not come and kill somebody's child.

πŸ˜…πŸ˜…πŸ˜…πŸ˜… What do they want students to do? You want this, you say otherwise. They are so confusing. Some lecturers will tell you if you don't buy their material, you will fail the course. It's not compulsory I guess.

As soon as I saw the title, I knew this will be an interesting read πŸ˜‚ Nigerian universities won't kill us before our time.

That issue of WiFi is everywhere, the funny thing is they will collect money but my school doesn't even have WiFi! Just a few faculties that have their own personal WiFi which is always under lock and key

The grading issue is the one that's most painful. I have a lecturer that has given me a D in two of his courses despite writng very well during the exam. He is waiting for me to come and "sort him". I just carried the D and went my way. I don't want wahala

My dear, you have done well instead of finding your way begging for something that is your right. Didn't you read for it? Sure you did but most lecturers are just wicked to act in such way.

That awarding of grades isn't my problem. I read for my exams and I can defend it. Immediately after the covid 19 lockdown, I needed to work because I had plans that will require finance before I go for nysc. I got a teaching job in a big school with just my final year result. I was able to defend my result because the proprietress was asking me questions on the courses I did and I answered her that was just how I got the job. If I had bought those grades what would I have done.

Can you imagine. I wonder how those who can't defend their results would be when they are asked questions relating to what they have been taught and they can't stand on their feet to answer correctly. It's a disgrace to them. I love to depend on my reading and my own hard work instead of bribing for marks.

I've said it before and I will keep saying it. Most Universities were built and designed to rip students off rather than help them. I still cannot understand the meaning of "Acceptance Fee". You should be happy I applied to your university in the first place πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ am I not bringing my money to study? πŸ˜‚πŸ€£

$ 0.03

πŸ˜…πŸ˜…πŸ˜… Abi na Instead of them to be happy, they are ripping us off. The worst part is they don't consider some of us whose parents find it difficult to find the school fees and they will still be adding extra charges if they fail to pay up at the stipulated time. So bad

All of these are true I have experienced them first hand it is almost as if they don’t care what we go through. Another thing about that grade is the fact that they make mistake sometimes when uploading results and if you want to rectify you have to go through rigorous process with is still 50/50. Wo God will help us

I am sad to hear that they charge the students to pay the fee of acceptance,I mean what kind of acceptance?lol.Lecturers should treat every student equally instead of showing favour towards particular students.I pray next generations can avoid these issues.

I pray so because it isn't ideal enough to favor one student over another instead of being equal with them.

Same as here, Princess. There are fees that are not necessary for us students like paying for the computer lab even though we don't use it because it's still distant learning.

You see! We also pray for Library use but I don't go there. I make my room as my library and God has been helping me through.

My dear, you are right cos before I gained addition into the high institution of learning our school's acceptance fee was merely 5k but when I gained admission, it turned automatically to 25k which is way too expensive than what it was before even the handouts are very much annoying let alone to mention others

$ 0.03

It's so sad o They just need to consider some students who can't afford it but choose to study and be educated.

The biased grading system is really terrible.. It actually demotivated those students who are studying more but getting less.. In some cases, it causes depression as well as suicide..

Exactly. You are very right. They are just too bias in the grading which is very bad.

This happen here also in my country. Payment before clearance. So many fees that need to pay but you don't feel the use to you as a student.

$ 0.02

They are really exhorting money from students so high. They need to consider that not all fingers are equal.

$ 0.00
3 years ago

This is hilarious πŸ˜‚. Most of them are coming in almost all Nigerian universities. But my school university of first choice. The nation's pride has free Wifi and it's working πŸ˜‰. And lecturers are not allowed to sell textbooks.

$ 0.02
3 years ago

There are some Universities though who do not enforce buying of textbooks to its students.

$ 0.00
3 years ago

Favoritism is also common here in our local school especially in elementary but in college I think it is not that rampant.

$ 0.02
3 years ago

I don't think they should involve in favoritism considering the fact that all fingers aren't equal.

$ 0.00
3 years ago

This is so heartbreaking. πŸ˜” I'm shocked with the wifi princess. It's really questionable. Yes mostly the issue is the favoritism there is no an equality, this is so unfair for the other students who put their efforts and hardworks but ended it is sad there's no fair. I hope everything will be change into a good one princess..πŸ™

$ 0.03

Sure, the acceptance fee is fixed already and I don't think they can cancel it unless they want to reduce the fee. I also was shocked to see WiFi fee being added to our school fees and I never used it. It isn't as if I want their data sef πŸ˜…πŸ˜…
