Computer literacy is the ability to effectively utilize computers and related technologies, with a variety of skills ranging from simple computer use to programming and advanced problem solving. A person's level of computer literacy can also be measured by how comfortable they are with computer programs and other computer-related applications. Having an understanding of how computers work and operate is also a vital asset. Computer literacy may be distinguished from computer programming which is the design and coding of computer programs rather than familiarity and skill in their use.

What is the importance of being computer literate in this modern world?

Computer literacy is becoming increasingly vital in our world today since our daily lives are increasingly dependent on the use of computers, rather than the way they were 2 decades ago.

Below are some of the reasons why being computer literate is important

• Many companies today heavily rely on computers to speed up and reduce the cost of their operations, thus employees must be able to operate computers if they are to work for them. Employers prefer that their employees have a basic understanding of computers so that costly training can be avoided. Companies prefer individual (who are applying for position) who has a basic knowledge of even mastery with Microsoft applications such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.

• Letters or mails are becoming a thing of the past, as instant texting or messaging between friends, employers, and family all around the world has made them unnecessary. Because of the speed and convenience with which they transmit, store, and print data, computers have supplanted pen and paper as the preferred method of communication.

• In the modern world, personal computers are no longer simple tools but rather high-tech machines that have the capacity to transform our lives. In fact, it has already tranformed our way of life, such as in regards to buying and selling of goods and services, payment of bills, and banking transactions. Indeed, in this day and age, computers have a role in almost everything, making it imperative that individuals become computer literate.

In a nutshell, our current society relies heavily on computerized technology to efficiently complete significant amounts of tasks. We can no longer afford to be technophobic. It is time for us to become computer literate, to embrace the technology revolution, and to prepare ourselves for a greater and brighter future.
