My Mirror
I've always woken up to either a call or a text from my dad but this time it felt something was wrong.I had woken up, checked my phone and the only message I had seen was "battery fully charged".
This was so unusual of my dad.
My father was my best friend and I was so found of him.Ever since I lost my mom(his wife),I could barely spend a day without hearing from him.The last time he travelled I feel sick that he had to come back instantly.
I went into the bathroom to have my bath, I came out and was about to prepare something for breakfast when I heard a knock on my door...I said aloud "dad I know it's you" then I realised I was actually staying alone.
My Name is Elvis Amanda the only child of my father and his late wife(my mom). I'm an 100level pharmacy student of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria.
According to my dad, my mom died a few days after my 7th birthday and ever since my dad had been playing the roles of both a father and a mother.
He always advised me like every mother would advise their daughters and most times when my friends talked about their moms I really don't feel sad even though I really wish I had a mom.
The knock on the door went up again and I opened the door to see who it was.It was the mailman who was at the door.He said he had a package to deliver to me.
I collected the package signed and closed the door. I had already opened the package halfway when I heard my phone ringing. I hurriedly went for my phone and it was my dad…
"Dad, why haven't you called since?
I asked.
"My sorry my love I had some stuff and I needed to clear them out ASAP.
Amanda I'll like to see you next week please make yourself available at home we have something to discuss".
I had not even replied when he hung up.
I went to the package I had earlier received and it was a pair of sneakers from my dad with a note saying:
Dear Amanda,
Hope you doing well at school
I'd like to see you at home next week
It's something important
I Love You
~Your Dad.
After reading the text, I immediately went into my room and packed my baggage.I was waiting for the weekend so as to go home.
Finally it was the weekend, I got to the bus stop as early as I could and boarded a bus.All through the journey, I kept on wondering what could it be that he sounded so urgent.
I got home and was warmly welcomed by my dad.My home still felt the same and I was really convinced that there was no place like home.
My dad called me into his room and at this point I was feeling really nervous. He started the conversation and I could not really tell if I was understanding his words but he made a statement that dropped tears down my cheeks.
My dad was diagnosed with cancer and he had few days to live.My Mirror, my best friend and my dad was leaving me behind in this world.I couldn't get myself together.I cried for days till I had lost all the energy to cry.
I went back to school and couldn't concentrate.I called my dad everytime just to hear his voice.
Few days later,I called his line and someone said "Sorry but your dad is no more".
I screamed and collapsed.I woke up in the hospital with tears in my eyes. By my bedside was a doctor named "Mr Andrews".
I told him I wanted to die also that I couldn't live without my dad cause I saw my reflection in him. Mr Andrews understood the story of a poor child like me and he promised to be a father to me.
Mr Andrews was a really nice man but no one could take my father's place.
It is so sad to read this. Be strong, dear.
