Every evening, after Idris had closed from work, he'd join the boys at the bar to cool off after the stress of the day. They'd share bottles of beer before going home. This had been the trend. Idris' wife never liked the idea. Seeing her husband drunk is the only negative thing about Idris. Several attempts to him had proved abortive.
The issue of drunkenness got worse. Idris became a heavy drinker and would sometimes fall into the gutter and sleep there overnight. The night he was lucky, his wife will be called upon to pick her drunk husband. She always would show up to take her husband home and clean him up.
After a messy drinking session, Idris usually stay off for a few days but would resume drinking with his friends. They would drink into the night especially enduring special events or holidays. One day, he got drunk as usual and fell to a dunghill where he slept all night. A neighbor who went to dispose of refuse early in the morning found him there, half-dead, and ran home to call his wife. She came and wept when she saw her husband sleeping in such a horrible place. She couldn't just imagine how he felt comfortable in such places.
That morning, Stella had a change of mind. She was going to quit the marriage sake of the several embarrassing moments when she was called to pick up her husband from such positions of sleep in the public. But then, she remembered that her parents warned her that marriage is for better or worse. Stella once again decided to stay back to give hope another chance. This time she resolved to do the unimaginable if her husband ever got drunk again.
One evening in July, when the rain was pouring down like no-man-business, Idris went to a bar where he got drunk yet again. Then, he fell asleep by the pool of stagnant water where frogs croaked all night.
That night, he lost all he had on him to some local robbers who ransacked him of all that he had, including the flash drive of a proposal the company where he works will be submitting for an application for a project the next day. His purse, I.Ds and ATM cards were taken away too.
When Stella was called this time, she went straight to the general hospital mortuary attendant and arranged to bring Idris there. They laid him there among the dead until he regained consciousness. When he woke from that deep sleep of a drunk and noticed he was in a morgue, the attendant appeared to the scene pretending like he was going to perform an embalmment procedure on him. Idris began to beg the attendant that he was not dead.
Mr. Tom, the mortuary attendant picked a whip and flogged him saying he was confirming if he was alive or dead. As Idris begged to say he wasn't dead, Mr. Tom flogged him the more.
That was the last time Idris ever tasted alcohol. He stopped seeing his friends, those who will always call him to a bar to have a bottle of beer.
When he resumed work and couldn't present the flash drive containing the proposal to be submitted, he was sacked. For several months, he sat at home jobless. It was during this period that Idris began to remember all the opportunities he had a lot for the sake of drunkenness. He swore never to ever taste alcohol the more his reflection tells him how he had suffered such embarrassing moments of getting to sleep in the dunghill or fitter containing dirty water and whatnot.
He was recalled to the company three months after the sack. The company had won the contract and needed a site supervisor. Everyone saw the change in him. He had become more responsible.
Lives of men with bright future have been destroyed by alcohol addiction. One also needs to careful of the friends he or she moves with. Your story is quite entertaining sir
