Are Our Grandparents Happier Than We Are?
As an African that was opportune to see his grandparents and to see how they lived their lives, I have come to ask myself if they were happier than we are? Good enough, enough indices can be used to say that we live a better life. You too would probably do the same thing but let's come to the fact.
The difference in the experience when compared to our grandparents, you'd see that there is a lot of improvement in the living standard of the world and people but yet, our problems, I mean social problems are on the increase than in the times of our grandparents.
To this, it may be difficult to convince you but the truths still are visible for everyone to see.
Advancement and Problems in The World.
The 21st century brought with it a lot of advancement and set the world on a scale to check the mortality rate but so far, the reverse has been the case. Let's take a look at how some of these advancements have caused humanity.
Automobiles & Industrial Machines
The many advantages of vehicles, I mean heavy duty machines, speed cars, trucks and the like are numerous but the depletion of the ozone layer via the release of chemical waste from these machines is a threat to life on earth.
The adjudication for a safer earth has gone wide with the United Nations holding several programmes to sponsor nations that are already experiencing these hazards.
There could be other causes of the depletion of the ozone layer.
The ozone layer itself is a level in the earth stratosphere that contains a high concentration of ozone that protects the earth from some hazardous ultraviolet rays from the sun.
During the time of our grandparents, little or none of the diseases that are currently ravaging the world existed. The reverse is the case now.
Pollution
Generally speaking, there has been an alarming Increase of pollution across the globe. Our water is polluted. Most of the aquatic life has been destroyed as a result.
The atmosphere is also polluted in some regions, causing dangerous disease to the human and wildlife lungs.
On the farmlands too, there has been a large amount of pollution where produce has greatly been affected causing food scarcity in parts of the world.
The depletion of the ozone layer has a great effect on the planet today. Let's look at some.
Effects on The Environment
Our environment, the atmosphere to be more precise have been exposed to ultraviolet rays that ought to have been guarded off by the ozone layer. These ultraviolet rays are somewhat harmful such that it minimises the rate of photosynthesis in flowering plants and causes retarded or stunted growth in plants.
Plants or green life generally are meant to protect our atmosphere by releasing oxygen but with this exposure we get little or nothing in return.
Effects on Marine Life
The aquatic food chain has greatly been affected by the exposure of ultraviolet rays to the earth, causing planktons to be destroyed, hence making aquatic life more competitive.
Our grandparents had enough food to go around than in our time when we are recording a decline in food supply.
Effects on Wildlife
In recent times, from different animal reserves, there have been records of eye cancer for animals because of the direct exposure to ultraviolet rays. Some had even recorded skin cancer.
Effects on Human Health
Some of the saddening reports have come in from the health centres around the globe about the alarming records of skin cancers that have been recorded in the last three decades.
We have also begun to experience quick ageing in human life, for the sake of the exposure to direct ultraviolet rays. Cataracts, sunburns and much more diseases are being recorded.
Now, the times of our grandparents they enjoyed relative peace compared to our time. Advancement has caused us a lot even though it has made life a lot easier.
