Although many people believe that the human body is as perfect a unit as it is, it is not entirely so. We have a number of body parts that do not have useful functions without which we would be perfectly healthy. However, they can get sick and cause discomfort despite their uselessness. But then why did they develop? Here are five unnecessary body parts and their story.
1. Wisdom teeth
These big grinding teeth once played an important role, as the nutrition of man at that time was still completely different than it is today. Today, in the age of processed foods, we no longer need to chew hard, chewy meat or plants with strong grinding teeth. Accordingly, our oral cavity has also become much smaller than that of our ancestors. And in this smaller oral cavity, wisdom teeth are finding it increasingly difficult to fit. Thus, more and more people may be forced to pull out their wisdom teeth that have grown out of an abnormal situation. Because if they get sick, they can cause serious problems. There are also more and more people who have not or not all of their wisdom teeth grown. Probably over time they will be in the majority, and the wisdom teeth will pretty much disappear completely.
2. Outer ear muscles
There are very few, but there are those who are able to move their ears. They do not benefit from this, they can entertain their environment with this stunt to the maximum. In the past, our ancestors, like animals, were probably all able to move their ears independently of their heads. Then the muscles of the outer ear also shrank, becoming redundant.
3. Male nipples
One of the most obviously unnecessary body parts is men’s nipples. They can’t breastfeed, so it’s completely incomprehensible why they still have the same nipples as women. The explanation for this is related to fetal development. Genetically, the sex of a baby is decided the moment you conceive. Yet, in the first eight weeks of development, the external sexual characteristics of all embryos in the womb are the same. (That’s why they can only tell if a boy or a girl is arriving after the eighth week of pregnancy.) By the time the boy develops testicular tissue in fetuses and starts producing testosterone, the initiatives of the male nipples are already formed and won’t go away. It wouldn’t even make sense: the presence of nipples doesn’t cause any harm to men.
4. Tail bone
The tail plays an important role in the movement of mammals, helping them to balance. That is why it is unfortunate to get rid of dogs from him, for example. Man, on the other hand, since he walks on two legs, straightens up, does not need a tail. Since it was no longer needed after straightening up, the tail shrunk and disappeared. But not completely. What remains of it is the lowest spine below the sacrum, the tailbone. Opinions are divided as to whether the tailbone is completely unnecessary, which can only cause pain, for example in some women during pregnancy, or whether some benefits remain. This means that muscles and ligaments also stick to it.
5. Worm extension, ie appendix
A few inches of protrusion of the cecum is located at the junction of the small and large intestine. We almost only deal with it if it becomes ill, becomes inflamed, because in that case it must be removed surgically. Its redundancy is well illustrated by the fact that patients can live one hundred percent life after surgery, they do not miss the worm outgrowth. By the way, appendicitis is typically a disease of young people, mostly between the ages of ten and thirty. But if it just annoys you, what are you looking for in our body? Researchers say it has no role today, but it may have been involved in the digestive process in the past. According to other opinions, it is still completely useless for storing beneficial intestinal bacteria.
You'll think they're unnecessary till one is missing that's when you'll realize how important they are
