In the past few years, racism has been discussed by scholars. The question by them is what really establishes racism. So many observations were made as to what bring about racism. So many anti-racism campaigners debated about how to overturn it.
What is racism? This is a belief system; the belief that one race or ethnic group is superior or inferior to another race or group of races. Funny enough expert hasn’t discovered a single facts that human being belong to a certain race. Any individual that looks down on another person as a racist need to be taken to psychiatric centre. Looking at the meaning of racist it’s someone who forcefully prevents another person from their freedom. There are two types of racism; we have direct and indirect. Direct racism means when a person maltreat you than another person when in similar condition simply because of your colour or ethnic origin while indirect racism means when a law treat everyone in the same manner but has an unjust cause on more people base on their colour or ethnic origin.
Discrimination this day; unfortunately, racism remains in our modern society as well. Let’s take for an example; black joblessness has increase more than white joblessness for years now. Reality wise it means partiality chip in to the black-white joblessness gap. Let’s look at the dangers of racism;
▪Social apartheid or segregation: this means a gap from a social gathering. Segregation can be in form of residential segregation, geographical segregation etc. segregation can take place within schools, workplaces and health care facilities. School segregation for example can come as a racial differences in registration of a professional course versus less professional courses between the white and black. Racial segregation can also happen at immigration situation.
▪Health inequalities: some scholars few years ago say there are connections between health and societal inequality which they later find out that this is related to racism. Conclusion was made then that racism affects health inequalities.
Let’s talk about the solution of racism;
▪Extol other cultures: stigmatization is brutal and is a hindrance, so arise for cultural differences in your local area by encouraging local enterprise run by immigrants in your country. Try various cuisines from various range of culinary culture. See movies from other regions or countries.
▪Never indulge in prejudice and hate speech: in America and Europe recently there has been a rise in hate speech blaming people living in their country from another region and minority groups for the unpleasant situations of their own countries. Speaks up for immigrants in your country, if something is posted on social media that shows prejudice, leave a remark to let them know intolerant speech is unkind and not palatable to hear.
▪Teach the young generation kindness: irrational hostile attitude and detest can be curb among young ones, as children learn such behaviour from adult living around them and also from friends, books they read and also social media. Fighting negativity begins at an early stage. Let them know we are all human and equal before God.
▪Lend your voice for harassed people around you, fight for them if it’s safe for you to do it: if you see someone or group of people been physically abused or verbally abuse, try and help them if it’s safe for you. Bullies power dies when people united to help the immigrants. Verbal and physical attack is not right and should not be accepted. These people deserve to be treated well.
Don’t except the solution to be easy give it time and we all will be free from the dread that causes racism.
