Webinar on Workplace Ethics for BSIT interns conducted
For almost 5 years, everytime we will deploy student interns we always require them to attend seminar on "Workplace Ethics". This is because we see the need of such activity for our students so that they will be prepared on the things that they need to do in the workplace that they will be deployed. Before the pandemic, we usually do the said activity in our Audio Visual Room but now, because of pandemic, we conducted it through Zoom.
This year, our speaker for the seminar is the Guidance Counselor and PESO Manager of our University Ma'am Trishea. Being an expert in student employment and guidance counseling, she has shared ideas and very relevant points for the said topic. She also shared practical scenarios.
As the coordinator, I am also reminded of the proper workplace ethics. She has shared 14 points to become a best employee and there are at least 6 points that I am going to share with you.
Integrity. This is very important in the workplace since being honest in all doings related to job is a strong moral principle. There are some cases when integrity is tested, but it is emphasized that students should be honest in their tasks. This is not only for students but also for employees.
Be Ambitious. It is emphasized that this point should not be taken negatively. Ambitious in the sense that you are going to dream of improving yourself, taking a leap in your career and be promoted. Not being contented for the said position all the time. This can only be done when you continue learning and show determination on the tasks that you do. So when there are opportunities grab it.
Timeliness. Doing the tasks on time and not allowing delay to happen. Prioritize things that needs to be done rather than things that will not give productivity.
Conflict Resolution. Ma'am Trishea said that in a workplace, there will be conflicts, small concerns that needs to be handled of which I agree. There are conflicts that are easily resolved but there are those that are solved through time. Employees must have the ability to resolve conflicts to maintain good relationships with co-workers.
Teamwork. In a workplace, you are not working alone, there will be workmates that will form part to be the team members. One should always be a good team player rather than a burden to the group. If there are issues, problems, the said team member should be honest to his/her workmates for them to help solve it.
Generosity. Generosity is the ability to share to the workmates what you have learned and experience through time. That's why, senior workers or supervisors become mentors of the newly hired. One should be generous enough what is being learned in the job.
After presenting the points, students were given time to ask questions. I am happy that students participated. There were questions on how to handle a toxic boss, a jealous workmate and about time management. The students also were able to share some learning insights. Overall, the activity was a success and I am happy for the outcome of our collaborative effort.
How about you? Have you attended seminars recently? Do you also have takeaways?
