Puzzle 2
Question:
Jacob had three sons, to whom he wants to divide his 19 horses, in the following way:
The oldest son was to receive half the property, the next a quarter, the third one fifth.
The three brothers were at a loss as how to divide the inheritance among themselves without cutting up a horse, until a stranger appeared upon the scene.
Dismounting from his horse, he asked if he might help, for he knew just what to do. The brothers gratefully accepted his offer. Adding his own horse to Jacob's 19, he divided the 20 as per the will. The oldest son received 10, the next 5, the third 4 . One horse remained: this was his, which he mounted and rode away.
Scratching their heads in amazement, they started calculating. The oldest thought:
Are not 10 greater than the half of 19? Someone must have received less than his proper share!
But each brother discovered that he had received more than his due.
How is it possible?
Explain your answer in the comment section and mention some to attempt Tue puzzle.
Oddly, if the 19 horses will be divided by 1/2 or 0.5, 1/4 or 0.25 and 1/5 or 0.20 , if you add this up there will be a total of 0.95 meaning the halving of inheritance have an excess of 0.05 of the total horses. This explains why what they have receive is still within the total of 19 horses.
Well nice puzzle. I came here to treasure hunt btw π
