5 Tips to Improve Your Content as a Writer
We want to write “perfect” and engaging content and as a writer, we put much effort into producing quality and knowledgeable articles so the readers will find them useful and read them until the end; this will increase your reading time and generate revenue to your blog. However, as a newcomer to the writing industry where you don't know how to start, it might be difficult for you to produce your dream content.
Good thing is, there are a lot of articles on the internet where you can get information, tips, and advice on how to improve your article.
And yes, this is one of those articles where you will learn to improve your content as a new writer.
Keep it simple
People want to impress other people, there's no doubt about that. They are doing it by using “extravagant” and unfamiliar words; they think that they look smart for knowing those terminologies. Yes, it is impressive, but being a writer doesn't mean that you need to use that kind of word.
As a writer, you can impress your readers by using simple words that will easily understand your point and what you are trying to convey. We need to use the simplest term so they will understand it. In the end, the goal of your article is to give information and answer the reader's question, not to give them an assignment about the meaning of the word that you used.
Don't beat around the bush
This is a popular idiomatic expression that most people use when they are talking to someone who loves talking and talking and talking. “Don't beat around the bush”, means being direct to the point where you will give directly the thought that you want to say and not talk about everything which is far from the subject.
This is a common mistake of some writers because they are focusing on the number of words in their articles. This habit should be avoided if you want to improve your content and gain more engagement from the readers.
Use an example
When you are trying to explain something in your article, why not try to give an example instead of talking nonsense and far from the topic? You can use your personal experience so you can explain it clearly. Furthermore, relating your example to your readers will also help by using the pronoun “you” so the readers will assume that they are in the situation and think of what will happen.
This way, your readers will easily understand the context because they can put themselves in the situation that you give in the example.
Use data and statistics
If you are writing an informative article, then using your opinion in the content won't possibly work. Imagine reading an article saying, “According to my opinion, 100 million US residents…” it is funny right? You won't see any kind of article like this; unless it is created for fun.
Going back, you need to use data and statistics which you can get on reliable websites on the internet to use as evidence that will support your content. This is an effective way to gain the trust of your readers to believe that you are telling the truth to them and you are a real source of information. If you don't believe what I am saying, then you can check Researchgate.net and this blog to defend my claim.
Moreover, remember to cite the links and resources of the data to avoid copyright and plagiarism.
But remember, there are personal blogs where data and statistics are not needed, it is based on the type of content you are writing.
Use proper formatting
This is an underrated way to improve your content, writers usually just write anything and ignore how their article looks. Using proper formatting on your article will help to let your readers read it. Having a scattered and inconsistent look in your blog makes it not presentable and unprofessional.
I remember when I tried to submit my work from one platform and they said I should use proper formatting; don't embed unnecessary links from the text, the correct use of headings, and the proper use of bold and italic formats. We should learn to use them not only punctuation and capitalization.
These are just 5 ways to improve your content and I am sure that more writers on the internet shared their experiences to improve your content. These tips are based on the things that I have learned from successful writers who write on different platforms such as Medium.
I hope this will help you – including me – to improve our content and become successful someday.
