Fake it till you make it

Finding a job is never easy, especially in my country where millions of people are fighting for very few jobs lying around, the competition can be very intense! I recently read an article on nairaland about someone that landed a job successfully after several weeks of job hunting, and it happened because he used a very odd approach: telling lies (sought of).

Source

How did he do it? Well, he lied on his CV. We all know that CVs are the window into securing a job and if the company goes through your CV and doesn't like what they see, they won't bother to call you for an interview. The young man noticed there were gaps in his CV and he guessed that's why he has not been getting called for interviews, so he filled those gaps anyhow with things he knows he can defend, and boom! He was called for an interview at the very first place he applied using the "new" CV.

He passed two stages of the interview and in both of them, the interviewers focused on those things he claimed to have done on his CV but he didn't crack under pressure, he answered them in a relaxed manner since it's something he knows he can defend (that's the key). The last stage of the interview was with one of the directors of the company and they gave him a hands-on test based on those things he claimed to have done and he passed as well.

After all that, he got the job and was told to resume the following week, cool right? Let's go over it again and then you will tell me what you think. He lied on his CV and claimed to have done some things which he hasn't but when he was asked questions about those things, he passed. And when he was given a hands-on test based on those things he claimed to have done, he also passed, will you say he is wrong for lying on his CV? Will you even say he lied? Let me know in the comment section 😉

Fake it till you make it

You've read all about it. You've seen the advice all over the internet, but have you ever tried to apply it? It's not just a catchy phrase, it's a way of life. A way of thinking that will help you get through every situation you encounter. It's a philosophy that can help you succeed at anything, especially when it comes to getting a job.

It starts with knowing how to fake it till you make it. What does that mean? If a company asks for proof of your experience, you need to know how to prove that you have done what they want and that is why you should only include things you know you can defend, it will be useless when they ask for proof that you can do those things and you can't seem to prove it.

In the world of business and entrepreneurship, there are a lot of people who think they know what they're doing. They've got the skills and experience, but what about the confidence to show it? That's another thing you should home whenever you decide to pretend about something, if the confidence isn't there, the interviewers are going to see right through you.

Faking it on your CV is only going to help get your foot in the door, after that the rest is entirely up to you. You will have to defend everything you have claimed on your CV and prove to them that you're capable of handling their business, and you're going to do all these with confidence. I guess the only aspect something like this is going to work is when you're talking about your skills and what you have accomplished with them.

If you lied about previously working with a prestigious company, they will probably have to call that company to verify, and you wouldn't want something like that to happen now, would you? It's best to stick to something that doesn't require calling a third party for verification and which just requires you to answer some questions to defend your claims.

Conclusion

If you ever find yourself facing the situation mentioned in this article, don't be shy about lying. The world is full of opportunities, but you have to take them. No one will give you an opportunity if you don't know how to get it yourself.

So let me be honest; I know there are many people who think this type of behavior is probably unethical but believe me, many people out there will say anything just to get a job, It's all about what works best for you and if you can defend those things you're lying about. I mean, the company doesn't have anything to lose if you can really do those things you claim, right?

Thanks for reading 💖💖💖

Yeah. You are right, but if we are to look at it practically , it's very wrong because the person will be regarded as a dishonest person, a cheat or lair which will damage the person reputation. But the situation of Nigeria is really bad now and every one wants to find one means or another to feed themselves and their family.

But will you really say the person is dishonest if he can prove he can do those things he claimed? The company gave him something similar to do as a test and he passed, they won't have any reason to call him a cheat or liar

Let me tell you my recent experience. One uncle like that gave me a link to submit CV and o should claim that I have 2years working experience in a similar firm. Omo! The firm is mechanical while I did Civil. He gave me a good clue, so that night I cooked up a matching cv to their requirement and went on YouTube to get ideals on how to somehow master the works I stated on CV.

Truth is that, we are all in the game, we get to be smart. They're yet to call for interview though. And the only possible Challenge there is calling a third party 🥳

Exactly o, everyone needs to wise up now. That's something I have noticed in the tech world as well, if a job requires some certain skills a person doesn't have, they will go ahead and include it in their CV that they have that skill and they will sharply go and learn it before interview comes up 😆

But there are some aspect that lying won't help you.

Yes you might pass the initial test but there might be a case in future that might need that expertise you claim to have.

My take is that we should avoid unnecessary lies and honesty sometimes open doors bigger than one can imagine.

Like I said in the article, you shouldn't add something you know you can't do. If the person can pass any test given to them about what they claim, why will they have any trouble if it comes up again in the future?

Test is different from physical problems. I passed a computer engineering exam doesn't mean I can repair a computer

Tests can come in the form of having to repair a computer as well. You missed the part in the article where I said the guy was given a hands on test to do and he passed? He was given a real physical problem to solve based on the skills he claimed to have and he did

In some situations, it is applicable. But in some cases are not. We are not sure what will be the next thing to happen.

That's true, I wouldn't recommend doing something like that in some conditions

For me, honesty is still the best policy. Though this is happening in real world but there are some who is really knowledgeable about something but dont have the chance to be in school. But work experience is hardly to be faked, you're right they might call the previous company.

Yes, honesty is the best policy but in a country like mine where the competition for a job is very fierce, people have to come up with tricks to reduce that competition, even if it means lying on their CV. But there are limits to which they can lie, the smart ones knows how to do it properly

Only the smart ones can do it properly and have the job.. how about those people who are not smart enough to do it. They can hardly find a job.

Then they will need to get smart, that's just how the world works. If they don't keep up with the competition, then they will be left behind

Yes, it may not be ethical, but what you say and try to explain makes a lot of sense, the end justifies the means when it comes to dreams and do no harm to anyone.

$ 0.01

Exactly, no harm was done to anyone and the company didn't have anything to lose since the person can actually do what he claims to have done
