The Abuser and Manipulator
Everywhere we go, there are always this two types of people. No matter what, when and where, and even no matter what the situation is, these types of people are always on the go, abusing and manipulating the situation and the people.
In a situation where people are so much in need, it should be a time of helping hand. It should be a time where we need to help and pick up each other, not a time to manipulate the situation and do things that aren't suitable for the situation, especially if the people are affected by any calamity.
We know that the VisMin (Visayas and Mindanao) areas are highly affected by the typhoon Odette, especially the Visayas area, which has so much damage and is so much in need.
As the typhoon Odette strikes, there is so much damage in every area in each place: Cebu, Leyte, Surigao, and Siargao. After the typhoon, Cebu City, which is the place I live in, went into a total blackout. After the typhoon, the city turns into a ghost town. The city has so much damage, and what's worse is that it's also what the province faces. The whole city went off: no lights, no network coverage, and no water supply. As the houses went down, so did the power in the whole city.
People are now starting to hoard things that are desperately needed two days later, and those who are unable to purchase them are the ones who are left behind and have left nothing. I noticed that people who are rich or classy are the ones who can easily get access to whatever they want and the unfair treatment of lower class people. We know that the richer people are the ones being prioritized because they have the power to do so, through the power of money that they have.
There is no electricity, so the price of gasoline and kerosene went higher than usual. Two days later, all the gasoline stations were filled with crowded people wanting to buy gasoline. Each one of them brought gallons or even a larger container. At first, the price was just normal and hadn't changed yet, but then the next day it doubled the original price. The price went up to 130 PHP per liter. But still, no matter how high the price is, if it's needed, people will buy it no matter what. At first, a lot of people were complaining, but then later on, they just moved on and just bought it. The sad part is that people will buy more than 1 liter, and the people who will be the last won't get enough of what they need. They left none.
My uncle, who lives in the city, even went to our province just to buy gasoline. Imagine: if the province is crowded, how much more in the city?
I saw on certain news that a group of three people were caught selling overpriced gasoline. They sell it per liter. The gasoline is in huge containers, so you can really tell that they bought it at a gas station, or maybe they're pretending that they aren't one and then selling it to those people who couldn't get to a gas station. I felt a sense of relief when I read the word "got caught" in the news. They deserve it because what they did was not a good thing, especially since all of us are affected and need to do something to survive.
Aside from gasoline, candles are also one of the things that are needed the most since we don't have electricity. But there will always be the abuser type of person. They abuse their power and use the opportunity to manipulate the people. Some candle sellers are just so evil for selling candles that are way too expensive. The tiny candle that was only worth 5 PHP before is now sold for 15 PHP. It's even tripled its price, and it's so small, literally. But as what I've said, no matter how expensive it is, people will be forced to buy those things because they badly need them.
But, as for us, we made DIY candles out of oil and salt, and we've already saved a buck. It's way better than the overpriced one.
I still don't get it why there are still some people who have the guts to be greedy in this worst kind of situation.
In this kind of situation, we all should help each other. It's the time where we set aside the bad things in each one of us and give more focus to helping each other stand up. This isn't the time for competition and bragging; it's the time to lend a helping hand to each other.
