Ethical Obligations of a Researcher

Research is a tedious task. It does not only require researchers to write and report. There are also guidelines and protocols they need to follow. These protocols would require them to understand their ethical obligations which include the following:

  1. Honesty and Objectivity

The findings or results of the study need to be reported based on observation, survey, test, or experiments. Researchers are not allowed to manipulate them for personal gain or interests. The methodology, data collection, interpretation, and presentation needs to be done accordingly without any bias.

  2. Critical Analysis and Confidentiality

All information included in the research needs to be reviewed carefully to ensure the credibility of data. Gathered data must be kept with confidentiality for future reference.

  3. Respect for Intellectual Property

Plagiarism is a major concern in conducting research. Proper citation and referencing or asking permission from the authors or contributors need to be observed. Any intellectual property needs to be acknowledged in these ways.

  4. Responsible Publication

Publication of research needs to be done for the purpose of community development and not for career advancement. Legal procedures need to be conformed according to the rules and laws that govern the study.

  5. Justifiable Use of Animals for Experiments

Researchers are only allowed to use animals as subjects for experiments that would justify the results of their study. Animal care needs to be taken into consideration. The exploitation of these species especially the endangered ones is highly discouraged.

  6. Respect for Human Rights

The use of human beings for experiments needs to undergo a series of tests and consultations to reduce the harmful impacts. Asking the consent from the participants is necessary and this includes the orientation of the benefits and advantage they and other people would get from it.

Hi @Jim, you're a teacher as written on your bio, may I know where did you base these "Ethical Obligations of a Researcher" since you've also mentioned "Respect for Intellectual Property" among the ethical obligations which states that

Plagiarism is a major concern in conducting research. Proper citation and referencing or asking permission from the authors or contributors need to be observed. Any intellectual property needs to be acknowledged in these ways.

But at the end of the article there are no references cited, only on the pics that you've included.

I have been teaching research for years already and these ethical obligations I have written about are based on my own understanding and synthesis of the varying experiences I had.

Basically, in an instance that the information is identical to some articles, it is unintentional. Moreover, these are considered general knowledge in research.

Integrity is so important, that even not to a writer, we should always observe that. However, being a researcher is not a joke. It entails a lot of harworks considering the ethics involve in it.

Truly, it involves a lot of tasks which would temp you to manipulate your data. But we have to be truthful with the process as the benefits are infinite.
