Good Morning everyone, this is my topic today.

Anger can work like a toxin in your body. Hostile feelings are apt to harm your health. According to the book I read, Anger usually sends a wake-up call to a group of hypothalamic nerve cells. These cells signal the adrenal gland to pump large doses of adrenaline and cortisol into the bloodstream.

Do hostile feelings have any effect on the immune system?

  • Immune system may be weaker in hostile people. Those with high hostility scores were at a high risk of dying not only from coronary disease but from cancer as well. Adrenaline and cortisol may cause the immune system to go to into a holding pattern.

Does this mean that every time I blow my stack I am damaging my health?

  • Most of us get angry at times. Our bodies are equiped to handle emotional upheavals from time to time. The real harm comes a result of frequently recurring hostility.

  • Many hostile feelings can be avoided especially those that arise from matters over which we have no control.

Are hostile feelings revealed in nonverbal body language, and if so, is that behaviour harmful to good health?

  • Not all anger is expressed overtly or verbally, but anger is anger. A knitted brow, disdainful tone, crossed arms, clenched jaw, smug expression and rigid muscles can convey anger as effectively as words. Wether the anger is hidden or openly expressed, the damage is the same.

Is there evidence that anger and hostility may lead to unhealthy habits such as smoking, overeacting, etc?

  • Hostile people are more prone to engage in risky behaviour, such as eating more, drinking more alcohol and smoking.

Are there not times when you have to assert yourself, especially when you have been wronged or harmed?

  • Controlling your anger does not mean ignoring injustice according to Martin Luther King Jr. Before asserting yourself, ask yourself if it is worth the effort to try to get the perpetrator to change. Sometimes it pays to take a few slow, deep breathes before you speak. This may result in a calmer voice, which apt to elicit a similar response.

In learning to control hostile feelings, is there not the danger that these feelings might become repressed and therefore an obstacle to good health?

  • Controlling yourself for being angry does not mean never feeling angry. While anger is often inappropriate, sometimes it can be a signal that you, or someone you care about, is being mistreated. As soon as you become aware of feeling angry, ask yourself three questions;

  1. Is this matter important to me?

  2. When I look at the objective facts of the situation, is my anger justified?

  3. Is there anything I can do to rectify the situation?

If the answer is YES, dont blow up , but do ask the other person for the specific change in behavior needed to correct the problem.

It also suggested that you spend a few minutes each day in a quite setting so that you empty your mind of disturbing thoughts. Relax your muscles and fucos on your breathing. Exhale slowly, letting all the air out of your lungs.

Another strategy is learning to listen. This means waiting until the other person has finished speaking before breaking in with your comments listening helps you appreciate the other perspective and decrease the likelihood of arguments.

Thank you for reading..
