Hive Basics For Beginners

**July 5, 2022** Recently, I've been reading posts about newbies on Hive from read.cash and their complaints about how complicated to navigate the platform is. It is true, as I've been there and it took me quite a long time before I finally comprehend its system. Honestly, there is still a lot more I need to know about the platform. I just need more time to learn them. I opted to write this blog to give a quick guide about the basics of Hive, to help you understand a little about it and how its system works. The pieces of information that I will state below are actually available in the **Hive FAQs**. You just need to open it 😅. **Hive Front Ends** There are different **Front Ends on Hive Chain** where you can post your content. They are social networks built on Hive Blockchain. You can earn **Hive and HBD (Hive Dollar**) by posting content and rewards depend on the number of upvotes you receive from curators and readers. You can set your rewards depending on the **Mode Of Payout** you want for your content. **50%/50% (default)**- you will receive half Hive Power and half liquid Hive Dollar from your content. **Power Up 100%** - all your rewards will be powered up. **Decline Payout** - you will receive no rewards from your post. **Rewards are being paid after 7 days**. You can check your rewards status by clicking the tips on your post, just like shown below.

For changing the mode of payout, you can go to your **Profile's settings** or on the **Advance Settings** when writing content. Additionally, **by setting beneficiaries**, a percentage of your reward will go to the beneficiary you choose. You can opt to make 100% yours if you want to or give back a few percentages to the platform to the default beneficiaries. Aside from posting articles, you can also earn more tokens through staking, or what they called **Power Up,** and **Delegating** or *loaning* out your Hive Power to others (usually to known curators) to receive interest from them. You can also earn rewards through **curating, upvoting**, and **engaging** with others. `(I'll make another article about ways to earn tokens on Hive)` **How to Power Up (stake), Power Down (unstake), Transfer, Delegate, and Trade on Hive?** I'm using **Ecency** when managing my wallet and doing these commands as it is easier there. What is Hive Power and why is it important to power up?

***The higher the Hive Power you stake, the higher your voting value.*** **TO POWER UP (stake):** Go to your **Ecency wallet**, then click **Hive wallet.**

Click the drop-down button, then click "**Power Up."**

**Input the amount** you want to power up or stake, click **next**, then **confirm**.

**Sign your transaction** using your active/owner/master key, or hivesigner. (*I usually use hivesigner here*). Lastly, click **Approve**.

**OTHER FUNCTIONS:** (*check the second image above)* **TRANSFER**: transferring Hive tokens to another account, or Binance Exchange, for instance. (*Wallet address and HiveMemo are necessary here*) **TRANSFER TO SAVINGS**: transferring Hive tokens to Hive savings account to earn 20% interest. **TRADE TOKEN:** to buy or sell Hive tokens on the Hive market. **TO POWER DOWN (unstake):** Just go to your Hive Power, then click the drop-down arrow. Click "**Power Down**." (*The same proceedings in powering up*.)

**DELEGATE**: to loan out your Hive Power to another account. **WITHDRAW ROUTES**: to withdraw your Hive Power to another account. You can also **stake your Hive Dollars** to earn 20% APR. In your Hive Dollars drop-down button, click "**Transfer to savings,**" then follow the same procedure as in powering up. (*Ignore the memo*)

*Hive Dollar is tradable only on the Hive market and can be used to buy Hive tokens. Converting Hive Dollar to Hive tokens would take 3 days, so much better to trade them directly in the market.*

https://ecency.com/market **For posting...** Some find it difficult to create posts, attach photos, etc, on Hive and other front-ends. It's complicated at first, but actually easy once you learn it well. I usually use Peakd for posting articles, and Ecency for reading, commenting, managing my wallet, and trading. *You can also make a draft in Google Docs or Word then just paste it on Hive or on whatever front-end you want to post it. (Don't be confused about the front ends. Anywhere you post, it will be broadcasted in the Hive chain and eligible to receive Hive rewards)* Just choose the community where you want to post your content then start writing. The visual editor on Peakd is easier to use compared to Hive. blog. Just explore the buttons to know their functions. Later, you'll realize that they are no different from readcash editor. For instance, ** for highlighting words * for italicized words > for block quotes # for headings --- for bar line (I'm not sure of its term 😅) And more

For the **Topics (or tags**) make sure to supply relevant tags so they will be noticed in the community and easier to find. The wrong use of tags might get downvotes to your post. You can enter up to 8 tags. Use **Enter** to separate each tag. (*I usually put the name of the community as the first tag)* For changing the **mode of payout, setting beneficiaries, and cover photo**, just click the **Settings icon** aligned with the Topics.

You can set a **Schedule** if you want to post it later or on a certain day. Just click the calendar icon next to publish button. Then it will be automatically posted on the scheduled day.

The number beside your name is your **Reputation Score**. It increases depending on the number of votes you receive from different authors. If someone with a higher RS and more HP voted for your post, it will give a positive impact on your reputation. The same is when you get downvoted by someone with a higher RS, it will make your reputation go down or less visible to your post. ***The best way to increase your RS is to contribute to the community, by writing quality content for instance, and engaging with others.*** The next number along the sliding bar is the **Resource Credit**. And **voting mana** starts with 100% (upvote and downvote) and will reduce every time you voted posts. It will replenish with 20% every day and you can vote up to ten a day, but with a lesser **voting value.** Much better to maintain 80% voting power to get a higher voting value. *Do not abuse your voting power, it might affect your account as well.
